Eden Hazard as center forward has carried a bad connotation for about three years now, even since a similar tactical move spelled the end of Roberto Di Matteo in 2012. Fortunately, this time, not only did we not lose, Mourinho's still in the job. And Hazard even played about as well as we probably could've expected him to play at center forward.

The interplay between our front four was, at times, quite lovely. Now we just need to replicate that, and score some goals, with a proper center forward in there, too. Hopefully that'll be a newly motivated Costa. Otherwise, we've got further complications.

Chelsea might have had a good performance yesterday against Tottenham at White Hart Lane but most headlines following the clash have focused on Diego Costa's "hissy fit" on the sidelines instead. Mourinho has already claimed that it's not an issue of course, but that's not going to be enough to change the narrative at the moment. Chelsea vice-captain Branislav Ivanovic, meanwhile, thinks it'll help the striker rediscover his strengths as well as remember that it's a team game, first and foremost.

"I expect Diego to come back strongly. I think we start the season as a team and we have to finish as a team. This is important. When we start losing, we all know it's not about the one or two players playing badly or playing well. It's about the team.

"Diego didn't play against Tottenham, but I know he'll be ready for the next game. He scored against Norwich - the winning goal. It's all about the team at the moment. I think we all have to think about that. Sometimes for a player who isn't playing it's difficult, but it is a normal situation for the club."

It's unclear what would happen if Costa continued to be not ready.

Over the past few weeks, following similar stories from the summer, rumours from Spain emerged that Diego Costa was unsettled in London, and that he looked to move out of the city, and therefore out of Chelsea, to get back to Atlético Madrid. But even if true, there's still a whole month and 6 matches before the next transfer window and neither Radamel Falcao nor Loïc Rémy have looked too impressive in their limited opportunities this season.

The second "Eden Hazard as a center forward" trial at Chelsea worked better than the first time it was tried, but the team still lacked the thrust provided by Costa himself last season. Especially at home, against a weaker team, Mourinho would probably like to have a proper center forward once gain. Whether Costa gets another chance to prove himself despite his antics remains to be seen however.

Appropriately enough for this nonsensical season Chelsea are having, what many seem to be calling Hazard's best game of the season, including Jose Mourinho (!), came in a 0-0 draw. At least it was against rivals Tottenham, and away, but a match featuring zero goals is not normally something that would be associated with best anything for an attacking player who not that long ago was voted the best player in the Premier League by just about everyone. But these are the days, my friends.

Mourinho did try a new tactical wrinkle, leaving Diego Costa out and rolling with four attacking midfielders to lead the line. At times, this move did pay dividends, though obviously not in terms of a goal. For his part, Hazard had fun with it.

"There was a lot of movement with small passes between us. It was not always easy but we did a good job and tried to score. We enjoyed playing together."

"I have played on the left, on the right, recently in the number 10 role, and I just enjoy playing. I know to give my all wherever I am on the pitch."

Movement, movement, movement. We've ben lacking movement by and large this season, but some of what was on display Sunday at White Hart Lane should be carried forward to subsequent goals and glory. Hazard may not get his wish to play in the number 10 role, but when the formation is as fluid as it was against Spurs, especially in the first half, such rigid designations of positions don't matter all that much anyway.

Not that I'd expect otherwise, Hazard's ready to commit to the cause in whatever position has starts.

"We try to take game after game and win game after game. We won against Norwich, we drew here and we play a good game at home next week which we have to win. We want to finish in the top four and we know it's difficult but we will try. We will continue to work hard and continue to take pleasure from our game."

A six-point against another top four contender would've certainly been useful. Alas, we'll just have to make up the 10+ point difference in the next 24 weeks.

Let's get the Diego Costa nonsense out of the way first. Just as he has maintained since the start of the 'rift', Mourinho claims that there are no problems between him and the Chelsea striker.

"Physically Diego is fine. He is working well every day and his mood is positive. I was not expecting a player on the bench to be jumping and singing because he is not playing. Top players are not happy on the bench so his behaviour is normal and he was ready to play when we he went to warm up. I have a good relationship with him."

-Jose Mourinho; source: Guardian

Mourinho also spoke of Diego's "privilege" of being the last big name player to spend a bit of time on the bench. Hazard, Fabregas, Terry, Ivanovic, etc have all taken a turn, and now it was Costa's. The manager says it was tactical, not personal, though it's easy to read between the lines. Hopefully Diego is reading that, too, just as he had been told before Sunday's match to work on reading the game better.

"Diego is very privileged because he was the last one to be on the bench," said Mourinho, who had clashed very publicly with Costa on the touchline in Haifa last Tuesday."

"Everyone else has been left out: the captain, John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, the vice-captain of England, Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fàbregas, Pedro, Eden Hazard, the player of the season and Oscar. Everyone was on the bench and Diego was privileged because I kept him in the team for all these matches."

-Jose Mourinho; source: Guardian

As far as the "bib incident" specifically, Mourinho also wasn't making a big deal out of it. At least not in public.

"If he wants to hurt me, it's not with a bib. I have a good relationship with him, no problem. If he watched the game with some attention from the bench he will know what is needed from him."

-Jose Mourinho; source: Guardian

While Chelsea did not manage to get a ball past Hugo Lloris — in no small part thanks to at least one tremendous save from the Tottenham goalkeeper — Mourinho was happy with his own tactical decisions, and even went as far as to call the 90 minutes the best "team performance", though obviously not the best result of the season.

"But I'm really happy with the decision because that was the best Chelsea team of the season. We have the team again, and we look to the future with a better spirit. The message to all my players, not just Diego, is that when we play as a team, and especially when we defend as a team, we are much better. If we play like that, it wouldn't be a surprise if we don't lose any of the next 10 matches."

-Jose Mourinho; source: Guardian

The manager singled out Eden Hazard for praise, which is always better than being singled out for criticism. Mourinho may not agree with Eden about what his own best position may be, but there's no doubt that the manager wants to set him up for success and thus get the best out of him.

"It was Eden's best game of the season. He had a great volley with his weaker foot for the save of the match. His game was more complete, with the ball and without the ball, attacking people and attacking space. When we had to play some long balls, he was jumping and trying in the air against their two Belgian boys who are two metres tall. He did fantastically well for the team so even though not scoring, his appetite to be important in the game and enjoy the game was back today."

-Jose Mourinho; source: Chelsea FC

Mourinho went on to credit both teams' defenses for the matching clean sheets and spoke of the enthusiasm with which we head into December. May the month bear many gifts, indeed, and no coal in our stockings.

Chelsea may not have won the actual match, but at least we didn't lose. Progress! Plus, a clean sheet, our third in a row. Baby steps. One might argue that we need giant steps, like a six-point against a top four contender, but we'll have to settle for baby steps.

There have been many "lowlights" form this 0-0 draw already. Diego Costa's sideshow antics. Cesc Fabregas's regression to your average Sunday League footballer. And of course our continued woes when it comes to finishing off chances.

But here are a couple highlights to enjoy and savor, Oscar getting into the holiday spirit with a couple nutcrackers. No wait, nutmegs. That's the one. Nutmegs. And who doesn't like a good nutmeg? And TWO nutmegs? Now you're just being spoiled.

With Costa on the bench, Chelsea's four attacking midfielders were quite fun to watch at times. Unfortunately, they did not produce where it mattered most. Still, the defense seems to be mostly sorted, so now we can figure out what can be done about the offense and, if necessary, what reinforcements can be brought in.

To say Cesc Fabregas has gotten off to a slow start this season is probably an understatement. There's just something a bit off in the Spaniard's game and it's starting to get a bit worrying. His performance against Spurs today will do nothing to alleviate those concerns as it was possibly his worst of the youngish season.

It was so bad in fact that someone out there in internetland was able to compile a whole 30-second "highlight" reel of Cesc's blunders and missteps against Tottenham Hotspur.

Set to the tone of the Austin Powers theme song, this 'lowlight reel' shows off several embarrassing moments for the Chelsea midfielder in today's match. Beginning with some abnormally terrible passing, a moment where he has absolutely no idea where to go with the ball then proceeding to kick to no one at all. Most embarrassingly is the moment when he accidentally blasted a ball right into the face of Willian while he's sat stationary on the ground.

Oof. Cesc has seen better days. If he has many more like this he might be facing the wrath of Mourinho soon.

0-0 at Spurs. That's ... well, it's hard to know what it is. Tottenham have been significantly better than Chelsea over the course of this season, and beyond that have been setting everything on fire in recent weeks. The Blues have not travelled well at all, either, gaining just four points from the six away matches prior to this encounter. On paper, a draw and a solid defensive performance is fine.

But, and I think Sir Alex Ferguson put this best:

Lads, it's Tottenham

Being in a position where anything other than three points at White Hart Lane feels acceptable (perhaps even positive) makes for a fundamentally depressing existence. It's the moment in life where your mediocrity becomes crystalised and your dreams boil away. The handsome knight sweeping you away on horseback transforms himself into that nice bloke you met at a party who you can pretend to yourself is funny. The Nobel prize you imagined from childhood becomes just barely winning a pub quiz. This was the existential crisis of adulthood, transmitted to us via football.

A draw, in context, is fine. It's just that said context should be making Chelsea supporters throw nearby objects at convenient nearby surfaces. All of which is to say that not a great deal happened in this one and I felt like the match report needed padding.

The big story, tabloid wise, will be the exclusion of Diego Costa from the starting lineup after a fairly public feud with Jose Mourinho. Eden Hazard was the nominal striker and one of the few bright sparks up front, but perhaps as a result of leaving their most dangerous forward sitting down/warming up/throwing his bib away in disgust, Chelsea were lacking something of a cutting edge throughout.

Happily, Spurs were suffering from a similar ailment. They had some mildly dangerous moments, but most came from ludicrously botched tackles that left the Blues out of position rather than from actual buildup play, and apart from a neat Harry Kane cross that found Son Heung-Min at the back post* (which ended up being a straightforward save for Asmir Begovic) there was nothing that we can point to as a serious threat.

*As the result of some supremely poor marking by Branislav Ivanovic, might I add.

Meanwhile, Hazard tried to score with a centre forward's header. It was adorable. His job mostly involved upsetting the Spurs defenders, and he did so with aplomb, earning a yellow card for Danny Rose while chasing a Cesc Fabregas pass down the right flank and receiving more than his fair share of kicks in the process. Kyle Walker, seemingly annoyed at not being able to kick anyone himself, lunged in on Cesar Azpilicueta with a tackle that might have been a red on a different day, leaving both Tottenham fullbacks booked before halftime.

After the break one might have expected the game plan to involve targetting that pair with Hazard and trying to force a sending off. It didn't. Instead, the game became even more devoid of attacking intent than the first, with both teams clustering in the middle third and finding their opponent impossible to break down.

Spurs were forced into a change thanks to an early injury to Ryan Mason, and his replacement, Erik Lamela, fashioned their only partial-chance of the second half when his improvised chip found Son in the six-yard box. Kurt Zouma was slow to react, but ended up doing just enough to force his man into changing his body shape and poking a weak shot straight at Begovic.

Chelsea were slightly more dangerous at the other end, by which I mean they contrived to get a shot on target. And it was a peach of a shot too, a superb Hazard volley from an Ivanovic cross which Hugo Lloris did very well to get to and even better to prevent it creeping in at the far post despite the touch. But that was the climax of our attacking game rather than the harbinger of any real pressure, and our woes in front of goal were typified when Pedro snapped up a miscue by Toby Alderweireld in the area and then passed to nobody rather than taking a close-range snapshot.

Tottenham played in Azerbaijan on Thursday and looked increasingly fatigued as the match wore on, but defended well and reduced the Blues to taking somewhat speculative set pieces. Unfortunately there was no repeat of the midweek magic against Maccabi Tel Aviv, and each was wasted.

On the bright side, it didn't ever look like we were going to lose. Which is more than we can say of the last time Chelsea came to Spurs.

In an unusual turn of events, Chelsea played a Premier League away match on Sunday, and didn't lose in hilarious fashion. They didn't win, either, but any points ar probably progress at this point in the season.

Jose Mourinho surprised everyone with his team selection today, going without a traditional center forward, a tactic which hasn't generally gone very well in the past. It probably wasn't too surprising, then, when the Blues struggled to create too many chances, though in fairness, they did create several good ones, and Eden Hazard probably would have bagged a beauty, had it not been for Hugo Lloris.

Regardless of the scoreline, this wasn't the typical 0-0 draw that pundits love to criticize. They probably will anyway, though. Here are a few thoughts following the draw:

As this one wound down, both teams looked relatively happy to settle for a single point. I can understand that from Spurs' perspective, but Chelsea really needed a better result today, and really shouldn't be too pleased with the result.

That looked better than most of Chelsea's recent attempts to play without a traditional number nine, but I'd still prefer to see Diego Costa in the lineup for big matches going forward.

Cesc Fabregas really needs to start playing well again. His passing was all over the place today, and he wasn't playing any less aggressively with the ball in the Chelsea half, which can be extremely problematic.

Remember that time Danny Rose was linked to Chelsea? Lol.

Lloris is very, very good.

Chelsea's center backs did a very nice job with Harry Kane today, who did basically nothing inside of the 18-yard box.
