Chelsea have been linked to striker Paulo Dybala quite a bit recently, and on Thursday, notoriously soft-spoken Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini had some fresh quotes for us. Here's what he had to say about the situation:

"At least three teams are really interested in him. The apple is ripe and we are ready to pick it."

"I think in 10, or a maximum of 15 days we will know his future. We will meet with the player and his agent to complete the deal."

"Those who understand football realise his potential."

As a target, Dybala makes enough sense for Chelsea to be interested if the price is right, but I'm not sure he's done enough at this point in his career that I'd be overly upset if the Blues decided to pass instead of spending a huge sum for a bit of a wild card*. Regardless, I'm hopeful that the situation does get resolved quickly, as Palermo's president is suggesting.

*I suppose that makes me one of those people Zamparini mentions who just doesn't understand football

I can't really imagine dealing with Mauricio Zamparini, so fair play to Gustavo Mascardi for being willing to put up with Palermo's mildly lunatic owner. Just like always, Palermo have one of Europe's hottest prospects, and just like always they're asking for a lot of money for him.

At 21, Argentinian forward Paulo Dybala is already terrorising defences, and is looking for a move up from the Sicilians. This is fine for Zamparini, because that means a lot of cash. Having learned his lesson after virtually giving away Edinson Cavani to Napoli a few years ago, the owner's now looking for a king's ransom to let Dybala go, and Chelsea are one of the few clubs who could theoretically afford him.

And as it turns out, the Blues are at least interested enough in Dybala's services to be asking questions. Here's Mascardi on the state of play there:

Juve are in pole position because the boy considers Juve as a good destination, because (Juve general manager Beppe) Marotta is a good friend that has submitted the highest bid for him so far. Zamparini is asking for €40m and it seems to me like a fair price. Chelsea presented an offer a while ago, but it was very low.

Source: Sky Sports.

I think this is about where we should be on Dybala. He's an interesting prospect and we should be keeping an eye on him and hoping to lure him to Stamford Bridge, but he's nowhere near a €40 million player right now and if other clubs are willing to pay it fair play to them. We're pretty well stocked on centre forwards with Diego Costa and Loïc Rémy (and Patrick Bamford, if we so choose), so I'd rather that cash be spent elsewhere.

At this point it seems as though our primary use so far as Zamparini and Mascardi are concerned is to drive up the price for other bidders. Just like always!

With the season winding down, silly season is fast approaching, and the March international break is often the unofficial start to the summer rumor fun. Today's rumor links us to Palermo forward Paulo Dybala again, and comes with fresh quotes from club president Mauro Zamparini:

'Dybala and Vazquez will probably be sold this summer. Will they go to Milan? No. They are being tracked by Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.'

While it makes sense that the Blues would be monitoring Dybala, as he's a quality young player that's already putting up terrific numbers in a less-than-terrific league*. That said, it's also very likely that Zamparini continues to mention the free spending clubs that he did because most of them print money, and that sort of thing could help milk those last few Euros out of financial minnows like Arsenal or Juventus.

*I know this quote could imply that Chelsea are also tracking Franco Vazquez, but that's just silly

I can't imagine that the Blues would actually pay anything close to the rumored fee for that particular, as I'm not certain he'd be a short-term upgrade from Loic Remy, and I can't imagine that the Blues would spend that sort of coin for a player to head out on loan. Then again, it's always possible that Michael Emenalo or Jose Mourinho rate Dybala very highly, and that this is more than a simple name-drop from Zamparini. I suppose I might have a reason to watch Palermo games now.

As the Ivanovic "incident" threatens to go nuclear like a runaway reaction fed by metric tonnes of media BS, here are some actual real things to talk about. Well, as real as things said by certified madman Maurizio Zamparini can get. Zamparini is the president of Palermo, and, if you're unfamiliar, he's basically all the lunatic owners and presidents and chairmen and directors in football rolled into one. He fires managers like they're part of his complete daily breakfast, for example.

Last time we had to deal with motor-mouth Zamparini was over Javier Pastore, and he jerked us around until eventually selling the player to PSG instead in a massive deal comprised of equal parts money, mystery, and shady dealings. So take anything he says with a huge grain of salt and an even bigger dose of anti-crazy medicine.

"[Juventus director] Marotta called me and I told him that I'd love to sell him to Juve because at least he would remain in Italy. I also said I do not think you have enough money to sign him. They do not have the big money or have oil money like Nasser [Al-Khelaïfi, PSG chairman] and Abramovich."

This follows a similar comment from earlier in the day.

"I'd give him to Juventus. Marotta has asked about him, but I don't do discounts. He's also wanted by Chelsea and PSG."

Clearly looking to sell, Zamparini has fallen out with the player completely. A bit unfortunate on the timing though, less than two weeks after the close of the transfer window.

"The boy [Dybala] is now in the hands of people who do not wish him well. It is difficult that he remains in Palermo, perhaps someone wishes to take it away on a free transfer. Football is now in the hands of certain characters such as agents who just want to make money. I do not talk more with him. He has completely changed. There are people who try to involve him in strange situations."

-Maurizio Zamparini; source: Radio Kiss Kiss via Sport Witness

The 21-year-old "new Agüero" is having his breakout season in Sicily, so just like with Edinson Cavani and the aforementioned Pastore, Zamparini is wasting no time in starting a bidding war for him. Regardless of how talented Paulo Dybala may be, or how serious any Chelsea interest may be (if there is any at all to begin with), this is probably not the last we hear of this story.
