John Terry lapped up all the immediate plaudits with much fierce glee, but he could not sway the Premier League's dubious goals panel. Such spoilsports.

-source: Premier League

The review panel must have deemed Lampard's curling free kick to be, in fact, on target and Terry's outstretched boot to not have made any actual contact with the ball. Though it is no doubt that the Captain's presence affected Tim Howard, as all the goalkeeper managed to do was palm the ball straight into the back of his net. By definition, own goals cannot be awarded for shots on target from the opposition and thus, the credit goes to Lampard.

It's certainly an odd way to score a milestone goal. It was Super Frank's 250th career goal, 210 of which have come for Chelsea. He has now reached five Premier League goals in each of his 14 Chelsea seasons. Combined with his 29 international goals, he continues to add to his legacy as one of the greatest goal-scoring midfielders of all time.

Super Frank, indeed.

In the first half Everton were probably the better team and we weren't quite our normal selves. We normally have a lot of possession at home and we didn't quite have that and they created a few chances. We found it hard to get a foothold in midfield. Roberto Martinez is a fantastic manager and they had their wide men coming inside and they had numbers in there.

We had a very good start, in the first 20 minutes we were in control and had a few good chances and positions to shoot. For the rest of the first half Everton were in control.

They are very comfortable on the ball, pass the ball very well and even though they don't create a lot of chances the quality of their possession is second to nobody in the Premier League... if they scored before us I don't think we're a team who would have been able to score two goals and win the game.

-Jose Mourinho. Source: ChelseaFC.com.

At halftime against Everton, things didn't look great. From the pattern of the game, first twenty minutes aside, it looked like it was the Toffees who were the home team. They were pressing high up the pitch and seemed to be able to slash through the flanks at will. With Chelsea in desperate need of a win to ensure they'd hold onto their place on top of the table, something had to change.

What in particular was the problem? It's all well and good to say that Everton were in control, but Mourinho gets paid to figure out how this came to be. What was going on? Why? Here's my stab at the answer:

Oscar had a poor match. That led to an interesting chain of events. Willian and Eden Hazard had to come into the centre to provide options in the attack and press the Everton pivot of Gareth Barry and James McCarthy; that freed up Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman to attack because the flanks weren't covered properly. Similarly, the threat provided by the midfield pairing frequently drew Nemanja Matic out of position, allowing Everton's forward three to roam almost at will.

Hazard and Willian coming inside into more congested areas made them less effective and meant that Chelsea didn't have a real threat out wide. Meanwhile, Everton -- who are staggeringly good at attacking fullback play -- were making use of the vacated space and the cascade of positional adjustments we were making to try to hold them off. That led to chances on crosses and on pullbacks. Not particularly dangerous ones, it must be said (Steven Naismith isn't that difficult to shut down), but chances nonetheless.

Simply replacing Oscar with a less injured player was an option, but Mourinho chose to address all of these problems at once by swapping him for compatriot Ramires and switching Chelsea to a 4-3-3. With Ramires' introduction, the Blues matched Everton's shape in the middle of the park. Frank Lampard and Ramires were up against McCarthy and Barry, leaving Matic able to control the area in front of the defence without allowing their midfielders time on the ball.

Lampard and Ramires also solved some of the problems with Chelsea's attack, leaving Hazard and Willian free to stay on the flanks. There they pressed Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman far more effectively than they did in the first half; the two were non-factors for the rest of the match.

Ultimately, the game was decided late, and it could easily have gone a different way. But second half was a very difficult affair from the first. Everton were toothless, and Chelsea were genuinely in control. Had we played like that all match, we'd have won by more than an injury-time goal; as it was we probably have Mourinho to thank for getting back in the driver's seat.

Ignoring Chicharito's meaningless consolation goal for United, the last meaningful goal that a JT-led Chelsea defense conceded was against Liverpool and Luis Suarez (well, technically, Martin Skrtel) on the last matchday of calendar year 2013.

While the whole defense deserves credit for restricting the Everton attack to mostly safe midfield possession and just a few forays down the flanks, having the Captain back brought just that extra bit of confidence back to supporters and players alike; 8.5 is his highest-rated appearance of the season and his fifth man of the match award, which puts him level with Oscar (who continues to fade) for second on the team.

The only negative aspect of this Terry renaissance under Mourinho is the slight pall it casts over the future prospects of the Chelsea center defense. At age 33, a replacement for the wily veteran will need to be found soon, and at the moment, nobody else seems quite ready to properly fill that covering, sweeping role. I guess we better give him a contract extension then.

In addition to Marco van Ginkel and David Luiz, three other Chelsea players are dealing with minor injuries

After Saturday's match against Everton, Jose Mourinho gave us an update on the Chelsea injury situation. We knew David Luiz was set to miss today's clash with a problem, but it sounds as if three other Blues were dealing with injuries of their own:

'Today he was saying he could cope with the pain, it's not a dangerous one, just a painful one. He said he could cope with the situation, clearly he couldn't.

'We have three days so let's see. With Mikel and David Luiz, I don't know if they can recover. It's important we have at least one of them because we don't have Matic for the Champions League.

'Ramires had a similar situation to Oscar, I tried to protect him and not play him but the game demanded I play him. Clearly, though, he could cope with the situation.'

Without knowing the specifics of any of the injuries, it's hard to know whether or not it'[s a cause for any concern. It's somewhat comforting to hear that Oscar is a bit banged up though, as he wasn't very good before being withdrawn at the half.

Regardless, Ramires making it through the second half without issue means that we'll at least have a functional eleven midweek, even if that starting lineup features a Ramires/Frank Lampard pivot. Having some other options would be nice, though.

Right now I don't think anyone much cares. One of that heroic trio delivered Chelsea a 93rd-minute winner against Everton, and the points are what matter, not the scorer.

There's no better feeling than a late, late win, especially in a game as important as this one. For 92 minutes, Chelsea looked like they were once again set to disappoint. Since the turn of the year, the Blues have been magnificent as long as they weren't at any risk of going clear at the top of the table. But three times they've played with a chance to either go top or extend their lead, and they've won only one of those matches.

The visiting Toffees presented the chance to extend our lead on Arsenal, at least temporarily, to four points. And so, naturally, the match was an exercise in frustration. Everton are an extremely good side and they did very well to frustrate us through the middle in the first half. Gareth Barry and James McCarthy kept Oscar so quiet that the Brazilian was hauled off at halftime by a less-than-pleased Jose Mourinho, but he wasn't the only one having a quiet afternoon.

The funny thing is that Chelsea started brightly, with Samuel Eto'o and Eden Hazard linking up well in the early stages. Everton were more than happy to commit Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman forward, giving Chelsea space to attack the visitors down the flanks. But that's not how it worked out -- instead it was said fullbacks who were the dominant attacking force of much of the first half.

Which isn't to say that the Toffees were that threatening. Leon Osman had a long-range shot tipped over by Petr Cech, and both Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta chipped in with key clearance as they kept the likes of Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith at bay. At the other end of the pitch, we were creating essentially nothing. Eto'o had an angled shot kept out by Howard, but other than that we were mostly treated to speculative and rather feeble long-range shots.

Ramires was Oscar's halftime replacement, Chelsea shifting to a 4-3-3. The move paid immediate dividends in terms of controlling the game -- never again would we look completely shackled -- but for a long time it looked as though Howard was going to single-handedly keep us out. The American international saved superbly from Lampard in the opening minutes of the second half, and followed that with a fantastic double stop from Hazard and then Ivanovic.

At the other end we weren't totally safe, as Cech's scrambled save against Osman after his scudding effort took a wicked deflection off Mirallas would attest, but that was about as good as it got for Everton. Despite the mounting Chelsea pressure, Roberto Martinez continued to search for a winner, throwing on Gerard Delofeu and Aidan McGeady; Mourinho replied with Fernando Torres and Andre Schurrle, the former proceeding to spread terror amongst the Toffees defence by kicking everyone in sight. At one point he managed to commit a foul by kicking the football, which, Lee Probert or not, is a pretty impressive feat.

Speaking of Probert, he'd annoyed the home fans a couple of times by ignoring Phil Jagielka's novel defensive strategy of touching the ball with his hands inside the box, but he was, at least, an equal-opportunity annoyer, putting in a display that made just about everyone who watched it angry. His inept performance made his injury-time decision seem more contentious than it actually was. Jagielka hacked down Ramires in a dangerous position, and despite Everton's protests it was a rather clear foul.

And so we come to the goal. Lampard whipped in the free kick, and neither Jagielka nor man-of-the-match Sylvan Distin bothered chasing his delivery. Terry, meanwhile, did, running at the ball just where it was bouncing in front of Howard. The captain probably didn't get a touch, but he did enough to ensure that Howard couldn't gather cleanly, spilling the ball into his own net to give the Blues a very late lead, a fine reward for all the late pressure.

A couple of dangerous set pieces later, Probert blew for full time. No points dropped here!

Relief

Chelsea managed to stay atop the table in a fixture that looked doomed to end in a scoreless draw. They were the better side for most of the day, but some poor decision making and execution had the result in doubt until the dying moments.

The first half was an odd one, as Chelsea seemed to be their own worst enemy. Like we've seen regularly this season, the Blues couldn't get out of their own way for long enough to hit the Toffees on the break. The space was there to attack, but Chelsea rarely weighted passes properly, and failed to control the few which were.

The second half saw Ramires introduced in place of Oscar. Chelsea had a very strong penalty shout several minutes in, as Phil Jagielka managed to block a shot with his arm as he was going to ground. It clearly wasn't intentional, but it probably should have been given anyway.

Regardless, it was a better start from Chelsea, who looked more composed to start the second half. Jose Mourinho seemed to sense this, and brought Fernando Torres on for Willian, hoping to find an end product. Samuel Eto'o shifted wide, but came off several minutes later for Andre Schurrle.

Chelsea kept pressing, but just couldn't find a way through a tough Everton defense in regulation. Luckily, a beautiful Frank Lampard free kick found it's way into the back off the net in the 94th minute. That's the sort of thing that wins titles, and will keep Chelsea atop the table at the moment.

Thoughts:

Oscar could have been better today.

As long as Chelsea's other attackers play as poorly as they did in the first 45 minutes, Eden Hazard is going to find himself with 2-3 markers at all times. It would be awfully nice if our guys did a little more to make his life easier.

Happy birthday Bran, welcome to the 30+ club.

There was some very odd refereeing today. Early on, he looked like he was going to allow very little physical play. He went through a stretch shortly afterward where he appeared to have lost his whistle, before making up for lost time by blowing every twelve seconds as the game wound down. It was awfully hard to figure out what was a foul and what wasn't, as there was no consistency in the calls at all.

Tip of the hat to Sylvain Distin, he was unbelievable today.

Scoreless at the break, as Chelsea were sloppy

Chelsea still have plenty of work to do at Stamford Bridge, as a combination of solid play from Everton and some sloppy passing from the Blues have this one scoreless at the break. Chelsea have had quite a few opportunities to hit Everton on the break, but haven't managed to correctly weight enough passes, or to control the few that have been placed relatively well.

All that said, Chelsea have had some good opportunities, and Everton have been pressing very hard. There's little reason to think the Blues won't have their chances to take all three points without making massive changes, some better execution would go a long way toward opening the scoring. As always, keep things civil and don't link to illegal streams. Let's go Chelsea!

Chelsea can stay top with a win at Stamford Bridge

Jose Mourinho's side dropped three points in their first meeting with Everton this season, despite being the far better team on the day. They'll be hoping to leave Stamford Bridge with a better result, as a victory over Roberto Martinez's men will leave Chelsea atop the table as March gets underway.

With that in mind, the managers have selected the following lineups for Saturday's match:

Chelsea: Petr Cech, Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry, Cesar Azpilicueta, Nemanja Matic, Frank Lampard, Willian, Oscar, Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto'o

Subs: Mark Schwarzer, Ashley Cole, Ramires, Andre Schurrle, Mohamed Salah, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba
