The Blues manager was sent to the stands on Saturday, and the FA has decided that wasn't enough

The FA have issued a statement today in response to Jose Mourinho being sent off this Saturday against Cardiff City. Here's the statement in it's entirety, straight from the FA website:

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been charged with improper conduct in relation to his behaviour during his side’s game against Cardiff City on Saturday 19 October 2013.

Mourinho has until 6pm on 24 October to respond to the charge.

Mourinho hasn't yet issued any sort of statement on the matter, and it's unclear exactly what sort of punishment the manager will be facing should he be found guilty. In all likelihood we're looking at a stern warning, but it's possible that we could be dealing with a game in the stands for the Portuguese.

I'd have to assume Mourinho will contest this, and I'm certain he'll wait until after the club returns from Germany to do so. That ought to assure that he's not facing any sort of punishment ahead of the Manchester City game, regardlees of whether he's eventually found guilty of improper conduct by the FA.

For myself, the most interesting point about this entire incident is that the FA again seem to have their priorities way out of whack. They issued a charge to the Chelsea manager for calling out refereeing incompetence during a game that featured one of the more hilariously botched calls that I can remember. As much as I loved seeing the officials allow Samuel Eto'o's thievery ahead of the opening goal on Saturday, I'd think it would be nice to at least acknowledge that it was completely botched rather than to try to gloss over it by charging Mourinho. Maybe Mourinho went a bit too far in criticizing the referee on Saturday, but that referee has earned every bit of criticism he's receiving due to a generally dreadful performance this weekend.

33' - bringing the playground into the Bridge with the steal of the bounced ball.

52' - pulls out wide left, showing good control and vision; second time in second half, following several such plays in the first half

67' - that shot power and fun/enthusiastic celebration

Terry (2)

5' - cool as can be; backwars header into Cech's waiting arms.

Hazard (2)

32' - almost creates an easy chance by playing 1-2s with Lampard than Mata.

33' - managing to stay onside (Eto'o as well) after Eto'o forced the turnover.

Oscar (2)

78' - pulls another stupendous effort out of the hat.

Onesies

Ivanovic, 22' - Ivanovic leads the charge down the middle on the counter after Cech catches the corner and releases the hounds.

David Luiz, 37' - after several raking cross-field balls, joins the attack personally, has a look from long distance.

FACEPALMS:

Hazard (2)

6' - gives up petulantly (frustratedly?) after losing ball (uncalled foul?) in center circle

72' - chooses right (Torres) instead of left (Oscar) on the break; pass not the best in any case.

David Luiz (2)

10' - five-second stupid. Jordon Mutch accepts the gift.

Ivanovic (2)

25' - third terrible cross in three minutes

45'+2' - continues to make seemingly every bad choice whenever on offense, this time passing straight out of bounds instead of to Willian.

Eto'o (2)

33' - doesn't take chance first time, letting Cardiff recover slightly before Hazard slots home

51' - having serious issues with clearing headers at the near post on defensive corners.

Onesies

Mata, 9' - swing and a miss!

There are many different types of 4-1 wins. Normally, they're comfortable romps, notable only for the otter lack of stress incurred over the course of ninety minutes, a welcome change to most football matches. But sometimes they're not. When there's a chance of the opposition taking points -- or even winning outright -- well into the second half, a 4-1 win brings both the joy of seeing your team score a slew of goals as well as relief that they're not actually going to balls it up.

Needless to say, the victory against Cardiff City was the latter sort.

I'm honestly not really sure what to say about the first half. It seemed as though neither side actually remembered how football worked apart from during set pieces. Chelsea had most of the ball, but went behind thanks to everyone's favourite type of goal conceded: A David Luiz temporary-brain-removal special. The centre back let Ramires' backpass roll right past him, obviously expecting Petr Cech to come out to clear the ball. But Cech wasn't close enough, and instead Jordan Mutch seized upon the opportunity, dinking home to give the visitors a shock 1-0 lead.

Fortunately for the Blues, Cardiff needed a mistake of that magnitude to score. Granted, they came close a little later from a free kick, with Peter Odemwingie producing a glancing header off Peter Wittingham's delivery and forcing Cech into a fine flying stop, but for the most part the Red Bluebirds* were happy to sit back and defend in numbers. And Chelsea weren't having much joy in breaking them down -- the only time they looked very dangerous prior to the equaliser was from corner kicks.

*I don't know what to call them anymore. Any help?

As it turns out, David Luiz's error wasn't the only howler of the half -- David Marshall upstaged him by quite literally handing Chelsea a goal. The goalkeeper failed to spot Samuel Eto'o lurking behind him, and as soon as he started bouncing the ball the Cameroonian nicked it (nb: The laws of the game quite clearly state that the goalkeeper is not to be challenged while bouncing the ball, but whatever). Eto'o duly seized onto possession, quickly feeding Eden Hazard, and after some frankly bizarre play the Belgian was able to scramble in the equaliser.

The early stages of the second half nearly saw Chelsea take the lead outright, with Willian coming within inches of turning in Hazard's low cross, but the match soon reverted to the frustrating game we saw before the break only without the awful errors. Eventually, Mourinho decided to make a change, going once again to a three-man back line and partnering Eto'o with Fernando Torres.

If Mourinho wanted to open the match up, he succeeded spectacular. Switching to the 3-5-2 was a high risk, high reward game, as evidenced by the ease at which Cardiff were able to attack following the switch, but the reward of two points was simply too much to pass off. And just like at Carrow Road, the gamble paid off spectacularly. Chelsea were able to apply some serious pressure on Marshall's goal, eventually earning a corner, and although it was partially cleared Hazard was able to recycle the possession and slip a pass through to Eto'o.

The Blues hadn't registered a goal from a centre forward in the Premier League all season, but that statistic was rendered irrelevant by some lovely play -- the striker skipped inside a desperate challenge and then finished sweetly inside the near post in almost the same movement. 2-1, and the comeback was complete.

However, the match was still rather nervous, and the changes to the Chelsea back line had left it looking rather nervous. Cech had to come to the rescue after a Branislav Ivanovic miscue led to Kim Bo-Kyung getting a chance from an acute angle, and it looked as though we'd have to endure some late-game stress before we could call the points safe.

But Oscar hadn't read the script. With twelve minutes to go, the substitute -- who's been the season's greatest success story to date -- picked up possession after good work from Ramires, and, seeing Steven Caulker back away, turned and blasted a shot in off the underside of Marshall's crossbar to make it 3-1. Four minutes later, Hazard completed the scoring by cutting inside and sending in a powerful-but-saveable shot that Marshall made a mess of, and the rest of the game consisted of blissful relaxation*, made all the more fun by how stressful most of the rest of the match was.

*Mourinho was sent off for something or other in the process, which made things even more fun.

With Liverpool drawing against Newcastle, Chelsea move into second place, two points behind Arsenal. It's not a bad place to be, all things considered.

The midas touch from Jose Mourinho - and a first club goal from Samuel Eto'o - spurred Chelsea to a second-half surge in Saturday's win against visiting Cardiff City.

The Special One indeed still has the special touch.

A somewhat labored first half highlighted by a pair of gaffes from each team rather than any sort of quality football - or chances - left Chelsea and Cardiff level at 1. The early stages of the second half, though more lively, resulted in much of the same and Mourinho, just as he did at Carrow Road a few weeks back, gambled by moving to three defenders. And, once again, the move paid off.

Chelsea reeled off three goals following the tactical switch, the first just two minutes after the move, to remain undefeated at Stamford Bridge this season in the Premier League.

Mourinho made the move on 64 minutes, bringing on Fernando Torres for Ryan Bertrand. The switch immediately paid dividends, with Eto'o cutting inside Steven Caulker following a incisive pass from Hazard, and slotting back across Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall at his near post.

Mourinho moved to four at the back almost immediately following the goal, with Cesar Azpilicueta coming on for Eto'o, and the rest of the match was a coast. Oscar added a stunning goal, one that shaved the crossbar as it whisked past Marshall, before Hazard wrapped up the day's scoring in the 82nd minute.

Perhaps a generous scoreline considering the first half, but the three points were thoroughly deserved. All in all - a good day at the office for the Blues.

I guess it's only fitting that, as we close in on Halloween, that we would be witness to a pair of genuine nightmares during the opening 45 minutes. This truly was Freddy Krueger type stuff, people. There was David Luiz, laughably lackadaisical as Chelsea conceded first, and then there was Marshall who, well, did his best to one-up our Brazilian defender. The horror.

Eto'o is still not quite there in front of goal, despite recording his first for the club, but the rest of his game seems to be returning quicker than expected. I was impressed with his movement, making himself available on the left early in particular, and his vision/passing was solid.

Marshall's nightmare continued into the second half, as the Cardiff keeper may have done better with Oscar's blitzkrieg and certainly should have saved Hazard's late goal. I reckon he's going to need to wear a mask about town this coming week.

I'm pretty sure we had around 98 percent possession in the first half.

John Terry continues to be an imperious presence at the back for the club. Much was said about him being potentially on the decline - some <strike style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">fools</strike> said he was finished as last season concluded - but here he is, proving to be our most dependable defender and looking better in each appearance.

I like Oscar.

Chelsea have been dominant but it's all tied at one after two of the most hilarious goals you'll ever see.

We've had about 95% of the possession and Cardiff have packed their final defensive third with the entire population of Wales, so it hasn't exactly been scintillating end-to-end action. Chelsea are doing their best to break down the red wall though, with Hazard & Mata & Bertrand often combining well down the left flank.

Cardiff's goal came from one David Luiz's trademarked 5-second stupid moments, while our goal was created by Samuel Eto'o's heads-up play to steal the ball from David Marshall. As Eto'o tried to round the keeper and lost the ball thanks to a barge by a defender, Hazard was on the spot to slot home his second of the season.

So, it's 1-1. One more to win it and open up the packed visitors. COME ON YOU BLUES!

Everything you need to know ahead or Premier League matchday eight.

Chelsea will be resuming their season in just under 24 hours, as they host newly promoted Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge. Most of the squad looks to be in good form following the international break, although there are a few minor injuries to concern us. Here's everything you need to know in advance of matchday eight.

Date/Time: Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 15:00 London time (10 am EDT, 7 am PDT, 19:30 IST)

Opponent: Cardiff City (14th, 8 pts from 7 games, -2 GD)

Location/Venue: Stamford Bridge, London, England

Chelsea FC squad news: Jose Mourinho confirmed today that neither Ashley Cole or Andre Schurrle will be ready to play on Saturday, meaning that Ryan Bertrand will almost certainly start in Cole's place. Who will be starting in Schurrle's place is yet to be determined, but it will be interesting to see if the opportunity sees Kevin De Bruyne return to the matchday squad.

Cardiff City squad news: Cardiff have no real injuries worth noting, but Craig Bellamy is still a tool.

It's time to tell us what you would do in Jose Mourinho's place

The international break is finally over, and the bulk of Chelsea's players have already decided their world cup fates. With that distraction out of the way, it's time for Chelsea fans to turn their attention back to Premier League football.

We'll probably be rolling out a new style for the choose your squad in one of the upcoming matches, but for today we're going to use the same format we've been using all season. Fernando Torres has been added to the list of players available for selection, and I'd have to think we're getting close to seeing both Tomas Kalas and Kenneth Omeruo be ready to be selected.

As always, pick the eleven players that you would start if put in charge of the club, and then select seven players to make up your bench. Discuss away in the comments section below, and as always, be respectful of other opinions even if they aren't the same as yours.

Update: Jose Mourinho has confirmed that neither Ashley Cole or Andre Schurrle will be fit to play for this one.
