Five times now he's occupied the top spot. Five! That's more often than David Luiz. More often than Oscar. More often than Hazard and Mata combined. Combined!

In those three months' worth of competitive Chelsea fixtures, Torres has made 18 rated appearances (and one non-rated) and won the vote almost a third of the time. More impressively, he's even scored eight times. If you squint just right, that's almost one-in-two! Positively apocalyptic. Should we be fearing for our species' survival?

So here he stands on the top for the first time this season with his first 8+ rating since going back-to-back vs. Benfica & Everton at the end of last season. Once we acknowledge the fact that yes, it was a goal and an assist and generally positively play against just League One Swindon, it's hard to argue that it's not deserved.

Perhaps the crooked number next to Chelsea's name is not nearly crooked enough for yet another match where they took almost twenty shots, but outside of the usual finishing woes, this was a solid, professional, almost good performance as goals from Fernando Torres and Ramires saw José Mourinho's side ease into the fourth round of the League Cup.

That the side sometimes lacked cohesiveness and cutting edge could easily be chalked up to the ten changes made from the weekend with just Gary Cahill keeping his place at center back. Partnering him was David Luiz, while Ryan Bertrand and Cesar Azpilicueta flanked him on the left and right, respectively. The midfield pairing of Michael Essien and Marco van Ginkel combined experience and youth, with the former also getting his first ever nod as Chelsea captain. Fernando Torres spearheaded the attack. Behind him, the second-choice attacking line of Kevin De Bruyne, Juan Mata, and Willian were all looking to impress. Also, Mark Schwarzer made his debut in goal, the first time he got to pull on the Chelsea shirt since his preseason howler vs. AS Roma.

A sluggish, even nervy in the case of Azpilicueta, opening was punctuated by a nasty looking injury to young Van Ginkel. As his leg bent in a way that was anything but natural, many of us had flashbacks to Oriol Romeu's injury last winter. Hopefully it's not too serious, but it's hard to be too optimistic after repeated slow motion, shiver-inducing replays. Thanks, Mr. TV Producer.

With the injury occuring in just the 10th minute, Mourinho opted against bringing on Lewis Baker and chose Ramires instead. It turned out to be an inspired move as within 25 minutes, Chelsea would be up two, the central axis of Ramires, Juan Mata, and Fernando Torres combining well. David Luiz had already stung Wes Foderingham's palms in the Swindon Town goal when the goalkeeper made a ... heads-up ... play to save magnificently from Torres. A typically perfect chipped ball over the top from Mata let Torres in, but his shot found the goalkeeper's head instead of the much more likely destination of back of the net.

Undeterred, Mata took matters into his own hand a couple minutes later, a wonderful pass from Ramires (!) letting the smallest man with the biggest chip on his shoulder in on the Swindon goal. Foderingham parried the shot but Torres (!) was Chicharito-on-the-spot and tucked home the rebound. Five minutes later, Torres turned provider, dropping deep and releasing Ramires who doesn't miss often when he gets to chip a goalkeeper. Two-nil to the good guys as we headed into half time and it looked like there would be plenty more.

Alas, it was not meant to be. Ramires joined Van Ginkel in the injury ranks with a half-time knock, causing yet another unforced reshuffle and likely scuppering any and all chances that Lewis Baker had to make his much-awaited debut. John Terry was Mourinho's choice as David Luiz moved into midfield to party like it's interim-time.

Swindon had the ball in the back of the Chelsea net shortly after the restart, but Dany N'Guessian was well offside and his headed effort was rightly ruled out. And while the hosts attempted to push forward and even played some decent football at times, the Chelsea goal was never really threatened. Mark Schwarzer proved more than capable of dealing with anything that they did manage to create in his vicinity. A good debut for the Aussie, who had just been left off the national team for the upcoming friendlies.

At the other end, Chelsea were guilty of some shocking misses and failures to provide the proper final ball. Willian shanked high from ten yards, before hitting his shot into a defender with the goal gaping. He also failed to provide the simplest of square passes for Torres to tap in, perhaps frustrated by Ryan Bertrand's inability to do the same to him a few minutes earlier. At some point, Kevin De Bruyne also missed an easy one following a goalmouth scramble. Demba Ba, on for the last ten minutes, joined the party by pushing his shot just wide of the far post. It was almost hilarious.

It's a running joke that Fernando Torres only performs against the minnows, but this match is certainly isn't going to help in not perpetuating that stereotype. A goal and an assist for Chelsea's number nine, but beyond that he actually looked useful for long stretches of the match and by my count only had one or two instances of those incredibly Torresian moments that we've come to know and dread. Yes, it's only Swindon Town; he still looked the most impressive of any our attacking players, and that's including Juan Mata. To his credit, Mata was trying his utmost with this utterly intimidating task of <strike>taking the One Ring into Mordor</strike> defending. I doubt that Mourinho will consider himself proven wrong, yet it's progress in the right direction. Probably too much to hope that it will call off the whole "Chelsea career over for Mata" talk though.

Two two-nil victories in four days then for our beloved club in "crisis." The draw for the next round will be made tomorrow, while up next on Saturday is the all-important trip to White Hart Lane.

Job done. Swindon never stood a chance, in all honesty, and they were only saved by the usual amount of poor finishing from Chelsea.

There was a period in the first half when the center axis of Fernando Torres, Juan Mata, and Ramires absolutely dominated proceedings and created two goals just between themselves. The rest of the match was not nearly as impressive, but for a mild Tuesday night somewhere in the southwest of England, it was good.

As Swindon tried to push forward - mostly ineffectively - Chelsea had plenty of chances to add to the scoreline. Willian missed a glorious chance or two, while Bertrand managed to make a fool of himself with a few terrible crosses and cross-attempts. Fernando Torres was a menace (until it came time to shoot), except when others decided to not pass to him.

A few additional snap judgments:

Mark Schwarzer looked about as solid as you'd like your backup goalkeeper to be. One shanked clearance, but confident and strong with his hands.

Bad day for Chelsea midfielders on the injury front: Marco van Ginkel was forced off in the 10th minute with a nasty looking knee injury. His replacement, Ramires, was forced off at the half with an undetermined knock. Meanwhile, in Watford, Josh McEachran was forced off with a knock as well.

The aforementioned injuries single-handedly prevented Lewis Baker's debut. Unlucky.

The "second line" of attacking midfielders wasn't overly impressive, but still collected an assist for Mata who probably should've had two. Willian missed hilariously when it was easier to score and would've had another if Bertrand had found him open on the back post. Probably should've passed to Torres though on 83 minutes. De Bruyne was the least impressive of the three, but did provide a telling pass to Torres.

Speaking (some more) of Torres. He always looks good against the minnows, does he not? Well done, Fernando.

The squad's finishing, overall, is still mostly poor however. Improvement needed.

FYI: If the only reaction you can muster up is that we're the suckiest bunch of sucks to ever suck, then please, just don't even bother.

It took a while to find a spark, but after the somewhat sluggish and nervy opening, it unsurprisingly came from Juan Mata. Swindon forgot to triple-mark him for a second or two, during which time he provided a telling pass to Torres (who missed) and then took a shot himself, forcing the save and allowing Fernando Torres to tuck home the rebound.

Ramires, the King of Chipped Goals, added a lovely chipped goal a few minutes later after some good work from Fernando who had dropped deep.

On the negative side of the ledger, Marco van Ginkel was forced off early with a nasty-looking knee injury. Hopefully it's not too bad, but the whole sequence of events was scarily similar to Oriol Romeu's injury. Fingers crossed.

So, two goals to the good, with the promise a few more. Wouldn't that be nice? I DEMAND FLOODGATES. And then an appearance from Lewis Baker.

Make it so.

We gave you the chance to play Jose Mourinho, and here's what you all decided

As always, we gave you the opportunity to tell us what you would do if put in Jose Mourinho's shoes, and we had an awful lot of responses to sort through to come up with the community lineup. The starting lineup was nearly unanimous, with only two positions generating much in the way of competition at all. The bench was far more interesting though, as there were quite a few players that came close to making the cut. Here's what you collectively decided:

Starting XI

Mark Schwarzer - 84.5% of you want to see Schwarzer make his Chelsea debut today. Australians everywhere can rejoice!

Cesar Azpilicueta - Azpilicueta has been somewhat of a forgotten man this season, but the vast majority of you want to see him playing against Swindon. Azpi was chosen as a starter on 1160 of the 1191 responses, narrowlyedging out Juan Mata for the highest total in the squad.

Gary Cahill - Cahill didn't have an overwhelming total, showing up on just 659 responses as a starter. That easily beat out Branislav Ivanovic though, as Bran garnered only 331 votes.

David Luiz - Luiz was a clear starter, getting 1105 votes for this one.

Ryan Bertrand - Bertrand wasn't as popular as Azpilicueata was, but still got an overwhelming majority with 1121 votes.

Marco van Ginkel - The young Dutchman was the leading midfield vote-getter, showing up on 1085 responses.

Michael Essien - Essien trailed van Ginkel by just 43 votes for this one, but finished over 900 votes in front of Frank Lampard for the second spot in our pivot. Landslide.

Juan Mata - I already hinted that Mata was a popular choice today, he showed up as a starter on 96.6% of the responses.

Kevin De Bruyne - Kevin De Bruyne didn't end up too far behind Mata, collecting 1096 out of a possible 1191 votes.

Willian - Willian brought up the rear for the attacking band, showing up on only 1094 responses.

Demba Ba - I honestly thought we'd see Fernando Torres as your choice for a second game in a row, but Demba Ba won the tightest vote of them all. Ba got 596 votes to Fernando's 531.

Bench

Jamal Blackman - The backup keeper was sort of close, with many of you split between Petr Cech and the youngster. In the end, Blackman was the choice for 570 of you, edging out the 445 votes for the helmet.

Branislav Ivanovic - Bran can provide cover for both Azpilicueta and the center backs, and I'd imagine that's why 718 of you selected him for the bench.

Ramires - Ramires didn't get much love for the starting lineup, but 707 of you wanted to have him on the bench.

Frank Lampard - Lampard trailed Ramires by a few votes, gathering just 676 for a bench role. That still give us the chance to see the Ramires/Lampard pivot at some point though.

Eden Hazard - Most of you wanted to see Eden Hazard get a rest, but 636 of you still want him on the bench.

Andre Schurrle - No center forwards made the WAGNH bench today, but Andre Schurrle can be the emergency cover with 677 votes.

Oscar - One of Jose Mourinho's favorites was the last man to make your bench, collecting 551 votes out of a possible 1191.

Back to winning ways then as the fixtures come thick and fast. Not that we would have it any other way.

Up next, it's the League Cup, which Mourinho used as a springboard for Premier League-winning ways the first time around. And although it's not too high on the ladder of priorities (4th or 5th, probably), I wouldn't say no to another successful (minor) cup campaign like that. Especially since José sounds more than ready to actually use the second-choice and youth players in it, unlikely some of his predecessors.

Chelsea squad news: The squad is in good health although Mourinho has pretty much already picked his starting lineup in the name of rotation and keeping everybody fresh and involved. Most importantly, that means that both Juan Mata and David Luiz will get to put their mistakes from Basel behind them. Hopefully.

In further positive development, Lewis Baker did not travel with Chelsea U21 to Everton today and should thus be the one youth player to be possibly involved tomorrow as per Steve Holland. The ideal scenario for the 18-year-old budding star is perhaps a seat on the bench and a substitute appearance once Chelsea put the hosts out of sight. It would be richly deserved; I'm hard-pressed to think of an academy player who has shown more improvement than Baker over the last two years. A truly two-footed, supremely confident midfielder who is capable of set pieces on the order of Juan Mata or Kevin De Bruyne all the while scoring more than his fair-share of goals (14 in 35 in all competitions last season), Baker has a bright future.

Swindon Town squad news: Our brothers in sponsorship arms (Samsung) finished sixth in League One, good enough for the promotion playoffs although not much further than that as they fell to Brentford on penalty kicks in the semifinals. And if a mention of Brentford that isn't enough to remind you of how annoying these cups can be sometimes, let's not forget that Swindon came back from two down to almost draw with Aston Villa in last season's League Cup 4th round (Benteke saved the day for the Villains in the 90th minute) after eliminating Stoke City a couple rounds previous. They're up to similar antics this season, booting QPR out of the competition (at Loftus Road!) in the last round.

Our brothers in managerial upheaval arms as well (Paolo Di Canio, Kevin MacDonald, and now Mark Cooper) are off to an indifferent start in eleventh place with just eleven points from the first eight games. Leading scorer Ryan Mason is a Spurs loanee (along with two others), while ex-Newcastle and England U19 prospect Nile Ranger is finding League One a bit easier to score in than the Premier League.

With a sold out stadium behind them, Swindon will be looking to insert themselves into the whole magic of the cup narrative.

View from the enemy: There's a glaring, Swindon-sized gap in SB Nation's soccer coverage. Fortunately, there is Swoodilypoopers.

Previously: It's been almost 20 years since we last met Swindon Town, during their one and only Premier League season (during which they set a record for goals conceded that still stands) and in a time when Chelsea were capable of finishing 14th (and were led by ex-Swindon manager Glenn Hoddle). Dennis Wise and Gavin Peacock scored in that 2-0 victory in front of just 11,180 spectators. Overall, the teams have met thirteen times with Chelsea failing to win just four times.

It's time to pick your squad for tomorrow's match

Chelsea kick off their League Cup campaign tomorrow against Swindon, and it will be an excellent chance to rotate the squad a little and get a look at some of the fringe members. Swindon are quite possibly the weakest opponent we'll face all season, and Jose Mourinho has already pretty much told us who we'll be seeing for this one.

Forget Mourinho for a moment though, as we want to know what you'd be doing if put in charge tomorrow. As always, we've put together a poll for you to tell us who you'd have in your squad for the upcoming match, both on the bench and in the starting lineup. This result should be interesting, as the results for this one will likely be far, far different from the results we saw over the weekend. Vote away, and discuss in the comments below. Be nice though, and respect other opinions even if you disagree.
