Despite the disappointment of a lost penalty shootout, there were several excellent performances in Chelsea Blue in the slightly less meaningful rematch of the 2012 Champions League Final.
Another match versus Bayern, another Petr Čech masterclass. You know our expectations are a bit skewed towards the spectacular when you're left feeling disappointed that he went the wrong way on the first three penalty kicks or that he just failed to get a strong enough hand to the Franck Ribéry's laser-beam of an equalizer.

He did have one hilariously mishit clearance and his distribution, as usual, wasn't exactly anything worthy of song. Plus, I don't think he'll ever do a swan-dive header like Manuel Neuer did in the one moment he felt like he was René Higuita. But Petr Čech is ours and Petr Čech is playing some of the best football of his life. The 9.1 average WAGNH community rating from this match is a new personal high for the man with 200 career clean sheets for Chelsea.

One thing we can all agree on, I think, is that hardly does a José Mourinho press conference pass without something quote-worthy. Following yesterday's loss in the penalty shootout lottery, he declared his team the better of the two sides - certainly not an outlandish claim over the first 90 minutes, 11-v-11 - and then went ahead and made some seemingly silly comments about refereeing and red cards that happen whenever he plays against teams managed by Pep Guardiola.

"I played two or three times with 10 men against Barça. I went to Inter and played a Champions League semi-final, one hour, with 10 men against Barcelona. I go to Real Madrid, I played again a Champions League semi-final with 10 men."

"Now I come back to Chelsea and played a Super Cup final with 10 men again, and go to analyse the actions and make your conclusions. I’m unlucky. Just that."

Hey, I thought we took José's tinfoil hat away from him! Plus, you know Mr. Manager, Guardiola's not the only common thread in all those matches.

But if we look a bit closer, is there something more subtle hiding behind the overt insinuations of conspiracies and cosmic injustices?

"If you ask me in pure terms, rule by rule, yes it was a second yellow card. But you don’t do this every action in that way."

So really, there's nothing to complain about is there? Even Mourinho recognizes that Ramires's tackle was a (yellow) card-worthy offense. Dangerously coming over the top of the ball like that, one could easily make an argument for a straight red, even. So what's Mourinho's game? If he agrees that it was a second yellow, why frame his response to the obvious question in such a contentious manner?

"People who earn their living in football always feel there’s a very important rule: the passion for football. If you are in love with football, you don’t kill a final with a second yellow card like this. You don’t kill the final."

"There were many other yellow cards that the referee didn’t give. There was a situation with Dante in front of me, with his first yellow card, and it was not given."

"A good English referee would have stopped the game and told Ramires: ‘Look, you’ve not hurt anyone but you mustn’t do that again.’ Or tell the Bayern players: ‘Don’t dive. Don’t try and provoke. Play a fair game."

José's playing the long game. The Super Cup is lost, there is nothing he can do about that and he certainly cannot undo Ramires's latest rush of blood to the head. But he can do his utmost to try to influence future decisions and by playing to the football sensibilities of future officials, he is trying to do just that. Perhaps he has just shifted the balance in favor of Chelsea, however slightly, whenever a referee has to make the next split-second decision.

I think my favorite part is the "good English referee" line. Now that Sir Alex Ferguson has left a power void, Mourinho is stepping up and making a bid. Dear Howard Webb: you're his, now.

Well, that was nothing if not fun. Chelsea were just -- and I mean just -- edged out by Bayern Munich as the Champions of Europe took home the 2013 Super Cup via penalty shootout. It was as entertaining a game as you'll see all season, with two very good (if slightly under-strength) sides going at it from the beginning. Sure, losing on penalties is a tough way to go, but that the Blues managed to hold their own against a side that breezed their way to a treble last season is impressive.

The fireworks started early. With Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thiago Alcantara ruled out through injury and Javi Martinez not fit to start, Pep Guardiola's hands were somewhat tied in midfield, and he eventually gave the nod to Philipp Lahm as lone holder. That worked about as well as one might expect.

Eight minutes in, Chelsea showed their stuff with a wonderful finish from Fernando Torres, but his delightful strike only came after Eden Hazard breezed through what Bayern were optimistically calling a midfield and set up Andre Schurrle on the right. Schurrle fired in a first time cross that Torres met on the half volley. Manuel Neuer had no chance at all, and the Blues took a surprise early lead.

The counterattack was, rather naturally, Chelsea's main outlet. Bayern, even without Schweinsteiger and Martinez, are excellent at keeping the ball, and the Blues were always going to have to soak up pressure and hit them on the break to get anywhere. They had two more chances in the first half, thanks to industrious work by Hazard, Schurrle and Oscar. Unfortunately, Torres couldn't make the most of them, twice shooting when he might have done better with a pass.

That Bayern failed to do much in the first half wasn't really down to good defending. In fact, they opened up Chelsea on several occasions only to be thwarted by some rather poor finishing. David Luiz had a wobbly start with some overly aggressive challenges, but the main threat came on the left, where Franck Ribery and David Alaba were overlapping against Branislav Ivanovic, occasionally with Mario Mandzukic also in attendance.

Time after time Alaba would send in a dangerous cross that had to be dug out at the back post or Ribery would mis-hit a shot (he did have one well saved by Petr Cech), but that they were so routinely able to cut Chelsea open was a hugely worrying sign.

There wasn't much to be done about it, though -- there's a reason Bayern won the Champions League last season, and that's because they're fantastic, and sometimes they can do things like that to you. Chelsea just had to hope that Ribery wouldn't hurt them too badly.

Unfortunately, the Frenchman found his shooting boots just after halftime. Toni Kroos laid the ball off to Ribery, and with Gary Cahill not quick enough to close him down Ribery lashed in a shot that beat Cech -- he did manage to get a hand to it -- at his near post.

Guardiola immediately deployed Martinez to secure the centre, and for a little while it looked as though Bayern would be able to grab two or three more before full time. They were putting a lot of pressure on Cech's goal, and it felt like a second was coming. And then we got a minor miracle in Dante falling over just in front of Schurrle. Yes, Oscar's shot was fantasically saved by Neuer, but that seemed to remind Chelsea that they weren't totally doomed, and they started to come out of their shell a little more.

Ivanovic hit the crossbar from a corner. Hazard had a shot blocked by Dante's afro. David Luiz momentarily looked like he'd grabbed the winner before Neuer clawed away his header. And just as things were going well, disaster.

It had been a contentious game, with a tonne of niggly fouls on both sides and a lot of yellow cards to boot. Ramires, on a booking, went in for a challenge with Mario Goetze rather too enthusiastically, clipping the ball before catching the midfielder's ankle with his studs. Out came the second yellow, and off went Ramires.

Playing against Bayern with eleven is problematic; playing with ten is nearly impossible. The excellent Schurrle was removed for John Obi Mikel as Mourinho shifted the side into something akin to a 4-2-2-1, and the Blues settled in to defend. Until penalties, if necessary. There was one late chance to win it in normal time, but David Luiz hit the wall with a free kick and we went to extras. 90 minutes in against Europe's best team, and Chelsea had held their own.

With ten men, it didn't seem likely that we'd be able to seize the lead in extra time, but thanks to a clever ball by David Luiz, a cut inside by Hazard and a mistake by Neuer Chelsea went ahead again in the 93rd minute. From then on, it was all hands on deck defending. Romelu Lukaku came in for Torres and ended up playing right about where Ramires started the match, as a central midfield-right back hybrid. John Terry was introduced for Hazard.

It looked as though Cech was going to save the day for the Blues, much as he had the last time these two teams met. The big goalkeeper came up with brilliant saves against Ribery, Mandzukic and Martinez as the minutes ticked away, but in the dying seconds, with the last kick of the match, Gary Cahill lost Martinez and allowed him to smash home the equaliser after a deflection.

The hard work was undone, and Chelsea had to face the gauntlet of the shootout. By now, this was just for the €800,000 in prize money -- the Super Cup itself is an irrelevance to a team that's already won it before, and the pride had been reinstated in full effect after hanging in against Europe's best side for 120 minutes, 45 of which were spent a man down.

And so, penalties. Four brilliant kicks from Bayern were matched by equally superb (better, probably) hits from Chelsea. We went to round five at level pegging. Xherdan Shaqiri's poor penalty was tipped by Cech, but went in anyway. And Lukaku's was saved.

Bayern had won the Super Cup after an excellent match. Congratulations to them*; they're an amazing team and it's impossible to begrudge them silverware. Chelsea, on the other hand, go home with something more than the 2.2 million they got for turning up (which is a pretty neat consolation price) -- they reestablished that, after the embarrassment of Europa League exile, they can hang with the big boys. In friendlies, anyway.

The Blues couldn't hold on despite leading with seconds to play, losing to Bayern Munich on penalties

Both Chelsea and Bayern named strong sides for this one, even if both were missing some players due to match fitness or injury. Bayern seemed to want revenge after the Blues defeated them in the last meeting between the two sides, while Jose Mourinho seemingly wanted to erase some of the ghosts from last season as soon as possible.

In that regard, things got off to a fantastic start for Chelsea, as just eight minutes into the game, the Blues were on the scoreboard. Eden Hazard made a dazzling run through the depleted Bayern midfield, and then slotted the ball to the feet of wide-man Andre Schurrle. The German immediately played the ball to the center of the 18-yard box, and the unmarked Fernando Torres volleyed the ball into the corner.

Unlike the last time these two sides played, Chelsea didn't appear to be content to sit back and absorb pressure. Bayern had the bulk of the possession, but every time Chelsea took the ball back, they quickly looked to initiate the counter. While that might seem an awful lot like the 2012 Champions League final, in this go-around, the Blues looked both organized and dangerous in launching the attack.

They should have had a second about midway through the first half, when Fernando Torres found himself with room to run out wide. The Spaniard fired one high and wide, while both Oscar and Andre Schurrle were running free in front of goal. A simple cross would have sent it to the break 2-0, but the lead remained at one when the halftime whistle blew.

Frank Ribery made the Blues pay early into the second half, with a fantastic strike to level the tie just after the restart. After that the Blues seemed to settle in nicely, still seeing less of the ball than their opponent but looking to break every time they touched it.

Dante gifted Chelsea a golden opportunity to re-take the lead, but Oscar somehow failed to put the ball into the back of the net. In fairness, Manuel Neuer did everything he possibly could have there, but there was little excuse for a player of Oscar's caliber not to get it by him.

The game continued to be pretty well played, with Chelsea narrowly missing a chance to go ahead on a corner. The always dangerous Branislav Ivanovic was kept out by the woodwork, denying the Blues a lead that they had looked close to taking on several occasions.

The next big chance came for Chelsea, as David Luiz was denied from six yards in front of goal. Seconds later Chelsea found themselves down to ten men, as Ramires picked up a second booking for a challenge on Mario Gotze. The Blues responded to the sending off with their first substitution, bringing on John Obi Mikel in place of Andre Schurrle.

Like our last meeting with the German side, 90 minutes wasn't enough. Extra time started without any changes for the Blues, despite still having a pair of substitutions remaining.

Minutes into stoppage time, the Blues were back in the lead. David Luiz led Eden Hazard with an absolutely brilliant pass, and Hazard cut into the box before slotting one past the diving Manuel Neuer. At that point Mourinho released the Kraken, bringing Romelu Lukaku on for Fernando Torres.

We reached the second half of stoppage time with the Blues still a goal to the good, and Bayern responded by throwing bodies forward. Petr Cech was called into action on several occasions, being required to make several excellent stops in order to keep Chelsea in front.

As extra time wore on, Jose Mourinho decided to close up shop. He brought John Terry on for Eden Hazard, and the Blues tried to repeat the closing moments of the 2012 Champions League final. They almost did, but Javi Martinez managed to level the tie on what was essentially the last kick of the game. Bayern went on to win it in penalties, making all five that they attempted.

Here are my initial thoughts after watching this fantastic game:

As much as we all love to joke about the ghost of Fernando Torres, that finish was absolutely beautiful.

The finish from Fernando was fantastic, but why he decided not to cross to one of the pair of wide open Blues for an easy second is beyond me. I've wanted Torres to go for goal more often for several <strike>months</strike> years, but that was not the time to get greedy.

Andre Schurrle is going to be lethal on the counter for the Blues. He breaks down the wing so quickly once the Blues gain possession that the fullbacks and holders can't immediately press the ball.

Frank Lampard has been one of our best set piece takers for ages, but he really hasn't been good that frequently when delivering corners of late. With the other options we have, it's probably time for Jose Mourinho to put someone else on corner duty.

The defensive work out of our attacking band today was fantastic. Eden Hazard in particular looked like a totally different player in that regard from last season.

NBC's coverage is so much better than what Fox did today. For starters, their stream shows the clock.

Petr Cech is still the man.

That penalty miss might well be the best thing that ever happens to Romelu Lukaku. As hard as he works already, I'd hate to think what he's going to be like in training after this. Watch out Premier League...

All in all, this was an extremely entertaining game between a pair of excellent sides. I was pretty sad that it had to end, and now I'm irritated that we won't have another Chelsea game until after this international break.

Ninety minute of football just isn't enough for anyone

The Blues and Bayern Munich are locked at 1-1 in a fascinating affair, with Fernando Torres and Frank Ribery scoring in either half to get us here. For the fifth time in the history of the Super Cup, the game will go to two 15-minute extra sessions in order to determine a winner. Should that not be enough, the game will go to a penalty shootout for the first time in it's history.

The Blues are having a far better game than they did in the same fixture last season

The first half of the 2013 UEFA Super Cup is complete, and the comments section of our game thread is overflowing. Because of that, we have a fresh new thread for you to use in which to discuss the game.

Chelsea got out to a quick start behind a fantastic goal on the counter. Eden Hazard's run caused Bayern all sorts of problems, and after Andre Schurrle received the ball, he found the wide open Fernando Torres to simply slot the ball into the corner.

Falcao had already netted a hat trick by this point in last year's Super Cup, so this has been a far better showing from the Blues. Let's hope it continues in the second half of play, and that we manage to bring another trophy back with us to London.

Please continue to keep the thread free of links to illegal streams, and treat each other with respect. Thanks, and let's go Blues!

Last time we played these guys it ended up being a pretty good day, so let's see if we can't get some of that happy feeling back, shall we? Reminder: This was the best team in Europe last season and they're very good. Also, this is a friendly that we get paid a lot of money to participate in. Try not to freak out too much if things don't go well.

Chelsea starting lineup: Petr Cech; Ashley Cole, David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Branislav Ivanovic; Frank Lampard, Ramires; Eden Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schurrle; Fernando Torres.

OR MAYBE (4-3-3): Neuer; Alaba, Dante, Boateng, Rafinha; Lahm, Kroos, Mueller; Ribery, Mandzukic, Robben.

Substitutes from: Tom Starke, Daniel van Buyten, Javi Martinez, Xherdan Shaqiri, Claudio Pizarro, Mario Gotze, Diego Contento.

That's a very wild guess as to Bayern's lineup, because Pep Guardiola appears to have access to exactly zero midfielders. It'll be like playing United all over again.

You guys picked a strong lineup to face Bayern Munich, and I'd expect Jose Mourinho to pick something relatively similar

We gave you the opportunity to tell us what you would do and over 1,300 of you responded. There was a pretty clear consensus on the bulk of the lineup, and here's what the community as a whole want to see:

WAGNH Community Starting XI

Petr Cech - Cech gets the usual nod in goal, although he received only 96.1% of the vote today. I'd guess that's largely due to a good number of fans that care less about the UEFA Super Cup than they do about Premier League ties, but I suppose it's possible there are just more Bayern fans trolling us than there have been for any of our Premier League opponents.

Branislav Ivanovic - Bran continues to be the WAGNH community choice to start at right back, appearing as a starter on 71.7% of the ballots. Once David Luiz is back and fully fit, it will be interesting to see how this number changes.

David Luiz - I doubt we'll actually see Luiz start this one, but he was a starter on 56.4% of the ballots. That was good enough to see him displace Gary Cahill from the WAGNH vote.

John Terry - Terry has had a relatively strong start to the season, and showed up on 75.4% of the votes because of that. He missed our last tie with Bayern due to a red card for kicking Alexis Sanchez, but if you all have your way, he'll start this one.

Ashley Cole - 88% of the community voted for Cole to start against Bayern, down quite a bit from the numbers against United. Again, I'd assume this is due to the Super Cup being the Super Cup more than Cole's performance thus far.

Ramires - The open threads and initial reactions aren't usually the kindest to Ramires, but for the fourth time in four of these polls, Ramires had more starting votes than any other midfielder. He was down a bit from the United game, appearing as a starter on just 65.1% of the ballots.

John Obi Mikel - The second pivot player was a pretty close vote, but I'd assume the club we're facing has most here looking for a solid defensive contribution. Mikel showed up as a starter on 41.4% of the votes, narrowly edging Kevin De Bruyne and Marco van Ginkel for a spot in the starting eleven.

Oscar - It's hard not to love Oscar, and 64.6% of you wanted to see him in the attacking band.

Juan Mata - Mata didn't feature against United, but 84.6% of you would like to see him start today. I think it's safe to assume the fans would be upset if Juan Mata was actually sold.

Eden Hazard - Believe it or not, there are actually people out there that didn't vote for Hazard in their starting eleven. He edged Juan Mata as the top vote getting attacker by just two votes, appearing on 84.7% of the ballots.

Romelu Lukaku - This will be the last match before we see Samuel Eto'o join the mix, and Lukaku is still the fans' choice to start at center forward. He showed as a starter on 77.1% of the votes, easily outpacing the other two options (three if you count Andre Schurrle).

WAGNH Community Bench

Mark Schwarzer - There's not much to discuss here, as an overwhelming 87.9% of you want to see Schwarzer as our backup keeper.

Cesar Azpilicueta - Azpi continues to wait on the WAGNH bench, as Branislav Ivanovic continues to get the nod as a starter. He's the runaway winner for bench defenders though, showing up on 46.3% of the ballots.

Frank Lampard - You guys didn't vote Lampard into the starting eleven, but 50% of you would have put him on the bench. Getting him in the game if it looks like we're heading to penalties would be a good thing.

Marc van Ginkel - The young Dutchman was awfully close to making your starting eleven, but ended up on the bench instead. 39.3% of you wanted to see him providing depth today, the lowest total of any of the seven subs.

Kevin De Bruyne - Like Van Ginkel, De Bruyne was very close to making the starting eleven. He was also a very popular choice for the bench, showing up on 53.4% of the votes.

Andre Schurrle - The German didn't play well at center forward, but was effective as soon as he slid over to the wing. Likely because of that, Schurrle showed up on 56.9% of the ballots as a sub.

Fernando Torres - Like Lukaku, how Torres does in these things will be interesting once Samuel Eto'o joins the mix. He did well in the bench vote today though, showing up on 62.4% of the votes.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if this is fairly close to what we actually see today, although I'd be surprised to see David Luiz in the starting lineup. That aside, we might not see too many differences today.
