Lucas Piazon cleared up some translation issues about his comments on Sunday.

Lucas Piazon had some comments earlier about the desire shown by his teammates in the Club World Cup, although there were some obvious questions about them being somewhat lost in translation. uckily, Piazon has come to the rescue, telling us exactly what he meant:

At this point I'd have to say this is a good thing, although I can't say that I would have disagreed too much with the original translation. Chelsea didn't look like they gave a damn today, and Corinthians certainly did. Corinthians deserved to win the Club World Cup, and Rafa Benitez really should have known there were players on the pitch that cared less than some on the bench. Hopefully these comments don't see Piazon benched against Leeds.

Are you upset at Chelsea losing to Corinthians in the Club World Cup final? Not as upset as Lucas Piazon!

-Source: UOL Esporte.

*'Character', which Piazon's PR rep is now denying he said.

Some Google Translate-foo gives us the following:

We were missing a lot, most importantly the desire to by Champions. I think Ramires and David Luiz strove to the utmost, gave it all and therefore are sad.

We lacked character, and love for the shirt. Nobody wanted to play. That is mental; I can not criticise. At least Oscar tried. I will not specify who did not, but the team came unwillingly. Do not get in a final unwilling to play, that's unacceptable.

I don't really get the 'I can not criticise' bit, but hey, the gist is pretty clear. Piazon is not a happy camper. The Brazilian players really wanted to win this competition, and while the rest gave lip-service to the idea of picking up the trophy the Club World Cup has nothing like the emotional resonance with European fans as it does the South Americans.

So why not let them play in the match? Even if the club didn't really care about it (and the fact that we had to say that we cared about the competition is evidence that we did not -- imagine being asked if we really wanted to win the Premier League!), there are players on the team for whom this represents a massively important moment in their career. Piazon not playing is understandable, but the fact that, say, Oscar was on the bench is kind of mind-boggling.

Oh, and speaking of Oscar:

There aren't a whole lot of reasons for a Chelsea player to have cared about this match. But when there are members of the squad who would have played their hearts out and they don't even get a chance... that's a bit sad. The solution, of course, is to come up with a tournament worth winning, not just for the Brazilians, but for everyone. Ball's in your court, FIFA.

Fifa declared Corinthians a 1-0 victor over Chelsea in the Club World Cup final when the Blues failed to show up for the match.

Chelsea lost to Corinthians in the Club World Cup final in a performance that was every bit as poor as the UEFA Super Cup or the 3-0 loss away to Juventus. I'm not going to write a lengthy match report on this one, as frankly, it just wasn't a very good game from either side and I'm having an awfully hard time finding the motivation to watch any of the game again.

Rafa Benitez made a trio of changes from the semifinal lineup, replacing Victor Moses with Oscar, Cesar Azpilicueta with Frank Lampard, And John Obi Mikel with Ramires. I'm sure many fans will criticize him for these changes, but frankly, I'm not too upset with them. Corinthians played their usual deep and tight cup style, so there was very little need for a holder. Bran was probably the right choice over Azpilicueta at RB, as his aerial threat on set pieces was worth far more than Azpilicueta's contributions from open play.

The one questionable decision for me was the decision to start Moses over Oscar. I think it was clear from the comments in the build up that this match meant a lot to the Brazilians, and from the performance on the pitch it seems it didn't mean all that much to most of the rest of the squad. Not only that, but the width provided by Moses was basically worthless against a team defending like Corinthians, at least it was worthless with Fernando Torres as the target in the box*.

*He's just never been a real threat against this type of defending.

I wasn't the only one surprised that Oscar didn't start, as the player himself thought it was 'crazy':

The first half was largely what we'd expect from a tie with Corinthians, with the Brazilian side sitting deep and defending well, and Chelsea largely dominating possession. The European champs passed the ball around fairly well, but chances were hard to find.

The few good chances that either team had came when Corinthians decided to push forward after a turnover. David Luiz did a pretty fantastic job dealing with virtually every Corinthians attack, with Eden Hazard also showing real effort on the defensive end to shut down the only one he couldn't deal with. Frank Lampard was laying some nice balls over the top to Torres, and Victor Moses forced a great save from Cassio.

The second half came with no changes, and it was much of the same for the first several minutes. Corinthians slowly started to push out more as the half wore on, and Paulinho just missed putting them ahead when he missed just wide. 69 minutes in, Corinthians would take the lead when Paulo Guerrero put his head on a deflected shot after getting behind Petr Cech.

From that point on, Chelsea would have to press hard to try to equalize. They actually created a fair number of chances, with Fernando Torres missing a point blank chance and Corinthians players blocking several other shots. Gary Cahill was sent off for something that was never shown on TV (and will now miss the Leeds game), and Torres had a goal correctly waved off for being offside.

The final whistle blew, and Chelsea suffered yet another defeat. It's hard to argue that it was anything but fair, as Chelsea played pretty poorly throughout. Full credit to Corinthians, they were very organized and made the most of their chance. It's exactly how we should have expected them to play, and we just weren't good enough.

Next up will be the League Cup quarterfinal against Leeds. It will be interesting to see how Rafa approaches that game, as he's now seen his first attempt at silverware with Chelsea come up short. I suppose he better be in fear of being sacked now, and I'm sure the boo-birds will be out when the club next plays at the bridge.

Chelsea played their first cup final under Rafa Benitez, and lost.

That was some game, wasn't it? Chelsea were disorganized in defense (although David Luiz was exceptional today), toothless in attack, and looked like a side that just didn't care. I can't really blame them for taking this lightly myself, but isn't this just about all Rafa Benitez has been talking about since the day he took over?

I'm not going to write too much or get too upset about this game, because frankly I just don't care about the Club World Cup at all. That said, I'm awfully disappointed at the way this team performed today after the managerial change was made. The only way that any of us were ever going to accept dumping Di Matteo for Rafa was if Chelsea started winning and generally looking fantastic. They haven't, today was just as bad as anything we saw under Robbie.

Here's a few thoughts in the immediate aftermath of this one:

When Chelsea won the Champions League in the style that they did, and Corinthians won the Copa Lib in the way that they did, this should have been exactly the type of game everyone was expecting today. I wish I had just stayed in bed.

Games like today are the reason that we never should have gone into the season without more depth at center forward. Fernando Torres just doesn't offer anything against teams that defend deep and narrow, and there was never any reason to expect him to do so. That said, he spent far too much time offside tonight. Instead of waiting for the line to play you onside, why not just step back?

The referee today was out of his league. When the first yellow card came out in the 55th minute, there probably should have been about a half dozen bookings already. And what exactly was the red card to Cahill?

Speaking of that red, Emerson is quite the piece of work, isn't he? The pitch must have been awfully lumpy, because he spent 80% of the match trying to roll it flat.

Cassio was fantastic in goal for Corinthians today. Full credit to him, he made some fantastic saves.

Chelsea cruised through to the final, defeating Monterrey 3-1 in Japan

Chelsea made their Club World Cup debut against Monterrey, and they did so with a relatively convincing victory. The club managed to grab hold of my interest before the game ever kicked off by inserting David Luiz into the starting midfield, an event that bore watching even if the game itself might not. Oscar also returned to the starting eleven, it was the first time since the Manchester City draw that he had been starting alongside Juan Mata and Eden Hazard.

That trio combined to create the first chance of the game within two minutes of kickoff. Eden Hazard dummied a long throughball that Oscar picked up just outside the 18-yard box. For the first time in the game (certainly not the last), he drew a pair of defenders to him before laying the ball in front of Juan Mata. Mata's shot would be blocked, but it was a promising start for the Blues.

David Luiz also look dangerous in the games opening minutes. After pushing forward and missing just high from 25 yards out, he played one of the best throughballs I've seen this season, setting Eden Hazard free on goal. Hazard's curling shot missed just wide, but it was one-way traffic early.

Chelsea kept up the pressure, and finally found the breakthrough in the 17th minute thanks to some excellent play all around. Ashely Cole played the ball into Oscar, who again pulled several defenders out of position before backheeling the ball into the path of the sprinting Cole. Cole then played a beautiful ball to the feet of Juan Mata, who opened the scoring by finding the bottom corner. 1-0 Blues, and it looked like the rout was on.

It was a bit slow from that point until halftime, with Chelsea creating fewer chances and the Concacaf side still creating virtually nothing. Chelsea controlled the game in basically every regard, but were still very much in danger of allowing Monterrey into the game with a single mistake.

That danger was erased just after halftime, as within five minutes of kickoff, the lead was increased to three. Eden Hazard decided to remind the world why he was so sought after this summer, ripping the Monterrey defense to shreds on the left hand side. He found Fernando Torres waiting on the edge of the 18-yard box, and a deflected shot would make it 2-0 Chelsea.

Torres was given credit for the goal, though it looked to be going wide before the Mexican hand put it into the corner. At this point I'll happily take it though, as anything to get Torres taking regular shots again will work in my book.

Minutes later, Chelsea would make it three on a brilliantly flicked in own-goal. Fernando Torres repaid his luck on the goal with an excellent cross to Juan Mata, and Mata was unselfish by sliding it back across the face of goal in the direction of Oscar. Darvin Chavez must have wanted in on the action though, as he greedily stole Oscar's opportunity and put it into the net himself. That really should have been the second own-goal in three minutes, both of which were created from some excellent direct play.

From that point on, Chelsea seemed content to put it into cruise control. Frank Lampard came on for Luiz, Paulo Ferreira came on for Mata, and Victor Moses took over in the center when Torres was subbed off. Monterrey started to look sort of threatening, continually finding their way in behind Chelsea very high defensive line. They'd nab a consolation goal with a few seconds to play, meaning it would still be no clean sheets for any Chelsea center back tandem not including David Luiz this season.

All told, this was about the type of game you'd expect against vastly inferior opposition. The game was never in doubt, and Chelsea looked more than happy to try a few spectacular flicks and tricks. A fun game to watch for Chelsea fans, but the massive gulf in class that was evident is why this event just doesn't catch on with the neutrals.

It was a bit hard to really critique this performance, as Monterrey didn't really put up much of a test. I'm intrigued enough by David Luiz as a midfielder to want to see it again, and with Corinthians and Leeds as our next two opponents, it would certainly seem possible that we do.

I was a bit disappointed in the lack of direct play though, as outside of the chances mentioned above, we weren't direct at all. When going forward quickly and pushing the defense back, we looked like we could score a dozen. Far too often though, Chelsea settled for passing the ball around and trying neat little flicks or long shots. There is certainly room for those, but mixing in some quick attacks would make those more effective. That said, it's progress.

It's on to the final for Chelsea now, and they'll be facing a much better opponent in Corinthians. While still not on the level that we see in Europe, Corinthians probably won't need an absolutely perfect performance mixed in with an off day from Chelsea to have any chance at winning. They are a solid team, and they are very well organized in general. If you couldn't convince yourself to get out of bed for this one, maybe you should on Sunday.

Chelsea defeated Monterrey to earn a place in the Club World Cup final on Sunday. Hooray!

That was fun, wasn't it? Chelsea flew half way around the world in an attempt to win their first trophy of the season, and they've now assured they'll have that opportunity in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday (for myself at least). Monterrey wasn't the toughest test for Chelsea, but at least it was an opportunity for them to try a few new things.

This was the first time we've seen Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, and Oscar start together since the Manchester City game, and David Luiz made his first Chelsea start in a central midfield role. It's hard to take too much from the game due to the opposition, but both were fun to watch. Here's a few thoughts after this one:

It was nice to see Chelsea's back four playing a high line, as that's the obvious tactical adjustment to protect the midfield when our attacking band pushes so far forward. Unfortunately Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic looked like the were struggling to stop free runs from getting behind them for most of the second half.

The more direct play that we saw against Sunderland was missing for most of this game. This was one of the few things I was really watching for today, and it's frustrating to see that it disappeared for the most part.

This was not Premier League quality opposition, but David Luiz looked good in the midfield. This should inspire a bit more confidence in our ability to cope with Oriol Romeu's injury.

Paulo Ferreira played right wing today. Who doesn't love Paulo Ferreira?

I was thrilled to see Victor Moses get a look at center forward today. With Daniel Sturridge still out, it's nice to see what Plan C consists of.

Marko Marin couldn't get a sniff in a 3-0 laugher. For all of you calling for him to get regular minutes, Rafa doesn't appear to agree either.

Chelsea still have not kept a clean sheet when David Luiz does not start at center back this season.

The first game of Chelsea's adventure in the Club World Cup is here! Rejoice! David Luiz is in midfield for some reason!

Rafa has gone bold with his selection for the FIFA Club World Cup Semi-final by selecting David Luiz in the pivot next to Mikel. He played there briefly against FC Nordsjælland, but this is his first time starting in midfield for Chelsea. Plenty of people have wanted to try it, and he would relieve a lot of the pressure on our midfield from the injury to Oriol Romeu, and John Obi Mikel being plucked into the Nigerian squad for the AfCON in January. This is a relatively harmless game in which to try this, so lets hope it works!
