Chelsea generally played terribly on Tuesday, and very much deserved to lose to Juventus.

Due to the dreadful form of Fernando Torres and an injury suffered on Monday by Daniel Sturridge, Chelsea ran out one of the stranger starting lineups that I've ever seen the club field on Tuesday. Eden Hazard was called upon to start at center forward, with Cesar Azpilicueta moving into the right side of the midfield. The rest of the starting eleven was more or less what you would expect from Chelsea this season, but to keep the same 4-2-3-1 shape that we've been using seemed a bit of an odd decision.

Chelsea looked good immediately following the opening kickoff, they passed the ball around comfortably for the entire first minute of play before Juventus touched the ball for the first time. It was clear from the start that Chelsea were content to sit back and defend, looking to break on the counter attack in the same way that they handled Barcelona and Bayern Munich last season.

Just three minutes into the game, Petr Cech was tested for the first time. The Blues were slipping and falling all over the back, and Juve took advantage and manged to get a cross over the top to the onrushing Stephen Lichtsteiner. Petr Cech made a spectacular looking save, but in reality he was positioned so well for it that Lichtsteiner had very little chance of beating him on that shot. Still, it was a worrying sign that Chelsea had already allowed a shot from that close on a cross.

Chelsea should have created the next chance of the game, but Ramires was denied a free kick in a very dangerous position on the counter attack when marauding down the center. They continued to absorb Juventus pressure, and almost took advantage when Juve seemed to push too aggressively just a minute later.

For some reason, Giorgio Chiellini was caught losing possession in the Chelsea 18-yard box, leaving acres of space for Chelsea on the counter attack. Oscar made a fantastic run, eventually feeding Eden Hazard for a point blank shot that certainly should have seen Chelsea up 1-0. He'd fire straight into Gianluigi Buffon though, and the game remained scoreless.

Juventus created several chances from corners, and Chelsea did fairly well with the first few. The third in quick succession saw a fancy play from the training ground though, that forced Petr Cech into an excellent save. It's hard to find too much fault with the defending on that one, as that was simply one of the better executed set pieces I've seen this season. Worrying, but a tip of the cap moment rather than something to criticize.

Juventus continued to press forward, and Chelsea did a nice job defending them for the next bit of the game. Juve managed quite a few shots form outside the box, but none of them did much to test Petr Cech. Juventus were controlling possession, but Chelsea were generally creating the more dangerous looking opportunities (although their shooting was absolutely dreadful).

Thirty seven minutes in, this would all change. Andrea Pirlo took a relatively harmless shot from 30 yards away, but a brilliant deflection by Fabio Quagliarella left Petr Cech wrong footed. Cech still made an excellent play to get a hand to the ball, but it wasn't enough to keep it out of the back of the net. Juventus led 1-0 on the back of a fantastic bit of play from Quagliarella.

Juventus nearly made it 2-0 minutes later, but Ashley Cole made a brilliant goal line clearance. The Blues almost leveled it just seconds later, as Cesar Azpilicueta laid a perfect cross in the path of Juan Mata. Unfortunately Mata barely connected with the ball, rolling it harmlessly to Buffon. Oscar was also denied by some brilliant last ditch defending, as the game went into the break 1-0.

The second half got underway with no changes to either side, and Chelsea created the first opportunity of the half when Juan Mata was taken down 20 yards from goal. His free kick didn't get over the wall though, and Chelsea would continue to chase the lead.

Over in Denmark, FC Nordsjaelland would concede a third and fourth goal to Shakhtar in quick succession, and it became clear that Chelsea would need a result in Italy in order to keep their fate in their own hands. Roberto Di Matteo responded by taking Azpilicueta off for Victor Moses, but the lead was quickly doubled as Arturo Vidal found the back of the net.

Kwadwo Asamoah easily beat Branislav Ivanovic on the right before picking out VIdal at the edge of the box. Vidal fired an entirely save-able shot at Petr Cech, but the ball took a deflection off of Ramires and caught Cech wrong footed for the second time. Unlike the first Juve goal, this was a bit of a fluky one. Vidal never should have had the space to shoot though, and Ivanovic didn't exactly cover himself in glory with his work on Asamoah. 2-0 Juve, and that would pretty much wrap it up as Chelsea looked defeated after the second Juve talley.

Chelsea brought Fernando Torres on for John Obi Mikel with 20 minutes to go as they pushed forward for goals, but Torres was never likely to make much of an impact against a team parking the bus and defending a two goal lead. Petr Cech got caught a mile out of goal for a third in the game's closing minutes, but by that point most of the players on the pitch had more or less checked out anyway.

Chelsea head into Matchday 6 needing help if they want to make it out of the group stage this season. It's certainly not impossible though, as a Shakhtar Donetsk win at home combined with a Chelsea win would see the defending champions through. Shakhtar will almost certainly be playing to win the group, as it will be their last game before the knockout round, and rest will not be an issue. There is definitely hope, especially as Shakhtar were a bit unlucky not to take three points in Turin earlier in the season.

Chelsea have concerns of their own at this point though. Eden Hazard did a decent enough job filling in for Fernando Torres, but at this point in his career, he's just not a good option at center forward. Fernando Torres has been woefully poor, and Daniel Sturridge is hurt. Chelsea just don't have many options to lead the line at the moment, and they desperately need help in that regard going forward.

There is also far too much space being left between the midfield and the center of the defense, and it's causing problems when the fullbacks are struggling to prevent easy crosses. This is not a problem with individual talents, but a group-wide failure to shut down dangerous spaces for the opponents to shoot from. This is the same general group that Di Matteo managed to turn into a well oiled machine last season, so some work at the training ground should be able to fix these issues. It needs to be done soon though, as this unit capable of being far better than they have been playing.

In the end, Chelsea very much deserved to lose this game. We drew a tough group, and this is a very young team. It's hard not to have expected better though, as at times this club hasn't looked like they belonged on the pitch with their opponents. All we can do now is take care of Nordsjaelland and hope, but let's save the over-reaction until the fat lady has sung.

Grab your Petr Cech crash helmet, because this is going to get rather ugly.

The talking heads may want to go ahead and prepare Chelsea's Champions League obituary for the 2012-13 season. An underwhelming opening 45 minutes gave way to an even more frustrating second half in Turin on Tuesday night, resulting in a thoroughly deserved 3-0 defeat to Juventus.

Such a result sees Chelsea's presence in the competition they won a season ago on life support. Simply put, progression is out of the club's hands now. Only a Shakhtar Donetsk win over Juventus, coupled with a Chelsea victory against Nordsjælland, on Matchday 6 will ensure advancement out of the group stages. Anything less and Chelsea becomes the first reigning champions to exit at this stage in 6,346 years.

Wonderful.

Now, for a choice few thoughts. There won't be many, as I'm pretty much ready to sock somebody in the ovary.

Simple put, the False 9 experiment did not work. Aside from some good counter play - which in itself was rare - we didn't threaten Gianluigi Buffon much at all. It seemed that, at times, our creative trident was hesitant to work the ball into the box without a focal point.

I can't believe that, in light of our glaring hole up front, that we need to splash even more cash following the summer outlay.

How do you think Fernando Torres felt watching all of this unfold before being introduced? If only there was some way to cut ties and let the man move on with his life.

César Azpilicueta is pulled in the 60th minute for Victor Moses. A minute later, the man he was marking, Kwadwo Asamoah, frolicked down the left side and set up Arturo Vidal for Juventus' second goal. Coincidence?

Roberto Di Matteo is Miles Davis cool. Regardless he has to be feeling some heat now.

So, Thursday nights? Not even the slightest bit funny.

Chelsea are in some serious trouble in Turin after a first half in which they were thoroughly outplayed and trail through a Fabio Quagliarella goal.

Juventus have controlled this match from the opening exchanges. Fortunately for Chelsea, there's this helmeted guy named Petr Cech in goal. Oh, and thankfully there's this specialist in goal-line clearances back in the mix as well.

Nevertheless, Chelsea find themselves trailing at the break thanks to a deflection. The bearded one, Andrea Pirlo, saw his speculative shot from about 25 yards deflect off Quagliarella late in the first half, wrong-footing Cech to give the hosts a deserved lead at the interval.

That's not to say Chelsea haven't created some chances - the visitors had the game's first real opening when Oscar produced a marvelous run from midfield to set up Eden Hazard - but it simply hasn't been enough to offset the superiority of the Bianconeri.

Saving grace? Shakhtar Donetsk have fallen behind to Nordsjaelland in Denmark. Wait, no they haven't. Willian just leveled the match at 2 just before halftime. Wonderful.

We need something out of this match, people. Keep the faith.

The Old Lady welcomes Chelsea to Italy on Matchday 5 of the Champions League, with the Blues knowing full-well what's at stake - and dropping Fernando Torres in the process.

This is kind of a big deal.

Chelsea require some sort of result Tuesday night against host Juve at Juventus Stadium (catchy name), not just to quell fears of potential elimination at the group stage of this competition but also to prevent anarchy from breaking on in the various comments sections around WAGNH. Anything less than a result would be, well, uncivilized.

A result, however, will be far from simple. This Juventus side may not be as imperious as last season's - they've won just one of their past three Serie A fixtures - but they remain an immensely talented group. Andrea Pirlo is likely to be fairly motivated for tonight, considering the way young Oscar locked him down on Sept. 19.

Now then, how about this Chelsea starting XI? Pretty interesting, I'd say. Torres, as mentioned previously, has been dropped. I, for one, am not complaining. With Daniel Sturridge not making the trip to Italy because of a minor knock (hamstring?), that means we're going to see Robbie Di Matteo go all La Furia Roja on us and play Eden Hazard as a False 9. There's also the surfacing of Cesar Azpilicueta in midfield. I reckon you, like me, are anxious to see how this unfolds.

Remember, keep the comments peachy and keep the illegal streaming links to yourself. Enjoy the match and, of course, all of the quality banter around these parts. Up the Chels.

Chelsea will be in Italy on Tuesday for what should be their most important game of the season. Ahead of that clash, we decided to break down the specifics of what every possible outcome today would mean for Chelsea and their prospects of reaching the knockout round.

Matchday 5 will feature a very enticing matchup for many fans, and it will certainly have an effect on exactly what a pair of games in the group mean on Matchday 6. With that in mind, we decided to break down the potential scenario for Chelsea after any of the possible outcomes from Tuesday. First, the potential Chelsea results:

A win over Juventus:

With a win over Juve, Chelsea advance to the knockout round of the tournament regardless of any other outcome. They would have a four point cushion over third place in the group, making it mathematically impossible to fail to advance. Potentially winning the group would still be reliant on Shakhtar dropping points in one of their remaining games, as a tie with Shakhtar will see the Ukrainian side win on head to head away goals.

A draw with Juventus:

A draw with Juve is a very good result for Chelsea. It puts the club in a situation where a win against FC Nordsjaelland secures advancement to the knockout round of the tournament. Winning the group requires help at this point, but it assures that the Shakhtar/Juve game will be a fantastic one for a neutral as it's the only result that would prevent Shakhtar from advancing today with a win over Nordsjaelland.

A loss to Juventus:

This is clearly the worst case scenario, as it is the only thing that can happen to take control of their own fate out of Chelsea's hands. Next, we'll look over at Shakhtar:

If Shakhtar win:

If Shakhtar win, they still control the group. This, combined with a Chelsea loss on Tuesday, is the only possible scenario in which Chelsea do not control their own fate on Matchday 6.

If Shakhtar draw:

Regardless of the outcome in Italy, a Shakhtar draw on Tuesday assures Chelsea advancement with a win at Stamford Bridge against FC Nordsjaelland. I think it's safe to say we're all a bit Danish today.

If Shakhtar lose:

Like a draw, this scenario has Chelsea controlling their own fate. This, combined with Chelsea/Juve draw in Italy, is the only scenario which could see the three-way tiebreaker come into play in the final matchweek.

Tie-breaking scenarios:

There is only one possible combination of events which could lead to the three-way tiebreaker being brought into effect, and at this point I'd say it's unlikely at best. Any of the three competing for the knockout round winning in any of their remaining contests eliminates the possibility of a three-way tie atop the group. In the extremely unlikely event that this scenario comes in to play, the higher the combined score in the Juve game, the better Chelsea will look.

Chelsea will lose any head to head tie with Shakhtar, as the Ukrainian side managed two goals in London. If Chelsea win in Italy, the tiebreaker with Juve does not matter, as they'd be four points clear of the Italian side with one fixture to play. If Chelsea lose by any margin, Juventus have the tiebreaker, and a draw with Shakhar in Matchweek 6 assures they finish above the European champions. A draw of 0-0 or 1-1 would give Juve the edge on away goals, a draw of 3-3 or higher gives Chelsea the tiebreaker. That scenario could only come into play with a Chelsea loss to Nordsjaelland combined with a Juventus draw in the Ukraine.

A 2-2 draw would essentially see Juve hold the tiebreaker, although in reality Chelsea would still be ahead on goals scored after the game. The only scenario in which that tiebreaker could come into play would feature a Chelsea loss to Nordsjaelland combined with a Juve draw with Shakhtar, a scenario that would see Juve with a better overall GD and therefore advancing over Chelsea. If we fall into that scenario, we deserve to be in the Europa League anyway.

Obviously, everyone here will be hoping for a win that would see Matchday 6 become a lot less stressful. A draw would be a pretty nice result today as well, and a loss could still be just fine if Shakhtar manage to drop any points. That said, seeing both ourselves and Shakhtar win and watching Juventus make plans for the Europa League would be awfully fun, so I'd be totally ok with that as well.

Chelsea are fighting for their Champions League lives as they travel to Turin. A loss to the Italian champions would mean that the Blues would no longer control of their own destiny and could face the very real possibility of being the first defending champions to fail to make it out of the first group stages.

This is a bit awkward. Despite having scored the most goals and possessing the best overall goal difference, Chelsea only sit second in Group E as we head into Matchday 5 of the 2012 UEFA Champions League Group Stages. Thanks to UEFA's over-complicated tiebreaker system, which counts not only head-to-head results but head-to-head goal difference and away goals, it is Shakhtar Donetsk who are the better placed. In fact, the exciting bunch from beyond the old Iron Curtain can guarantee their place in the knockout rounds by simply performing to expectations and slapping silly the FCN Jellybelly Cupcakes of Denmark, in Denmark before heading home and avoiding a loss against Juventus.

The second part may not even matter of course, due to the aforementioned tiebreaker, should Chelsea lose on Tuesday. On the other hand, we should hope that the Ukrainians (well, Brazilians) still take it seriously, for if Shakhtar win both of their matches, Chelsea only have to win at the Bridge versus FCN in order to progress into the knockout rounds. But having to rely on results elsewhere is a bad place to be.

So what's a good place to be? A win or a draw in Turin would be a start. Barring an epic collapse on Matchday 6, a point gained on Matchday 5 guarantees at least second place in Group E for Chelsea. A point gained and the club avoids the possibility of having to sulk shamefaced into the Europa League as the first ever defending champion to fail to advance from the group stages. A point gained (especially THREE points gained) and all of a sudden we feel a lot better about two wins from the last seven in all competitions. A point gained and we get to look forward to the prospect of knockout round Champions League football (few things are better or more exciting). A point gained and we avoid a thermonuclear meltdown of the WAGNH servers.

So, I guess, to sum it up: please don't lose, please don't lose, please don't lose, PLEASE DON'T LOSE!

Juventus: The Old Lady may be in a bit of a mini-slump as well, having won just once in their last three Serie A contests and having seen their 49-league-match unbeaten streak come to a crashing 3-1 end at the hands of Internazionale.

Over the weekend, they also dropped points to Lazio, in a 0-0 draw that saw a couple key players rested (albeit via suspension & illness). Despite the suspended Andrea Pirlo's absence, Juventus had the upper hand but they failed to make their chances count. Sound familiar? Well, actually, no it shouldn't - unlike Chelsea, Juventus never quite looked like self-destructing at their own hair-raising passages of "defending." Speaking of tactics, feel free to review Tim's opposition scouting report from earlier to season.

So then, by all accounts, Juventus should have their full squad available for this match. Pirlo is ready. Mirko Vucinic has gotten over his flu. Simone Pepe is back from long-term injury. Arturo Vidal is apparently back in good form, while Fabio Quagliarella has five goals in his last five appearances. The new stadium will be rocking and Chelsea will have to come-a-knocking.

Chelsea: The Old Guard, or whatever remains of them, is old and crocked but at least Ashley Cole is back. So it's pretty much going to be the new Chelsea out there, although Di Matteo has hinted at a bit more of a defensive outlook to help shore up the sieve in front of Petr Cech's goal. To me that means a splitting up of the Trifecta, with either Eden Hazard or Juan Mata dropping to the bench and replaced by a defensive winger in either Ryan Bertrand or Victor Moses.

The British media, still blinded by the sheer amount of space that was afforded by the England National Team to Pirlo, are once again praising the deep-lying one's rhythmic pulling of strings. Quick, somebody alert Agent Oscar to put the bearded one into his back pocket once again!

The rest of the team will have to follow suit and play solid defense. An early chanced goal would be fantastic but I'd be equally happy to head into the final quarter hour tied and looking to bring on Eden Hazard and Victor Moses to run the tired hosts ragged on the counter. For Juventus will have to push for the win and Chelsea should have opportunities to score.

Of course, scoring does require a striker normally. Should I dare to guess who will play striker for Chelsea in this one? Trying to guess the cure for cancer may be easier. So, no.

Ok, fine. Daniel Sturridge.
