After a heroic second half effort against Tottenham Hotspur, which helped decide the Premier League title in favor of Leicester City, Chelsea failed to produce the same kind of effort and performance against a weaker side just a few day slater. Relegation-threatened Sunderland, just as Chelsea had on Monday against Spurs, used their home-ground advantage to push the team forward. The Spurs match was perhaps the loudest Stamford Bridge got all season. On Saturday, The Stadium of Light wasn't far behind.

Alas, Chelsea could not deal with this pressure as well as on Monday, and instead of rising to it, we let the opponents grow into the game to earn their 3-2 victory in the second half.

"For them I think the crowd felt like the 12th man. It was not hostile, just a very enthusiastic atmosphere, but my players are experienced in that. We should have coped. Sunderland felt the energy of the crowd but it's worse that we let them stay in it by not killing the game off. It made them a little more energetic in the second half."

"In the first half Sunderland had maybe three or four chances. You can say they wanted it desperately, but we wanted to win of course. There was a little lack of sharpness in finishing it off. I think that was maybe the difference. When you take too much time, you start thinking but then the moment is over."

Some of the frailties shown in our last game have been present for quite a while. Giving up leads wasn't too much of an issue when we were almost always first to score and were able to grind out results last season. The team's issues elsewhere have exacerbated this issue as well. Here's hoping Antonio Conte, his staff and the board can do their best to address these issues over the next months as we look to put Chelsea back into title contention.

Since 'tis the season to read (too much?) into Nemanja Matic's actions, now it's time to read (not quite as much?) into his words. Actions can speak louder than words, but at least when talking about John Terry, Matic's words are loud and clear enough.

"Of course, he [Terry] is not happy we lost. But we know what he has done for this club and what he has won. All of us in the team wish him all the best for the future and of course this is not a good way to finish in a club but we don't forget what he won and what he has already done."

-Nemanja Matic; source: Telegraph

If Matic were a judge, he'd slam his gavel down at this point, having ruled in favor of Chelsea in the case of Chelsea vs. John Terry's future. There's still time to give Terry a new contract of course, but the rest of the squad seem to be expecting the outcome that's been obvious for a while.

But while Matic speaks with a palpable sense of finality about Terry's career, there remains a sense of 'we' as far as his own Chelsea future is concerned. Maybe that's why he celebrated the way he did, defiantly, in a sort of "in your face, I told you so" gesture towards whoever said he couldn't do it anymore?

"Yeah, it was a great goal, but I decided not to celebrate. I have my reasons."

Maybe those reasons will disappear in the next few months, with a new coach and a fresh start?

"This is football. Sometimes you win, other times not. As you know, last season we were champions, and this season we were not even close. But we will see in the future what we can do."

"This season was not good for us as you know already, but I believe in our quality, I believe in myself, I know what I can do and we showed that we can play very well, we can do something when we want to be champions and we will see next season what we can do - every season is a different story."

-Nemanja Matic; source: London 24

Matic has looked poor and disinterested and disheartened for most of the season, and perhaps stretching back even further, to that infamous Ashley Barnes tackle. It's been over a year since then, maybe it's time to finally put that all behind him and get back to being great as he was in 2014? Having that Matic back to anchor Antonio Conte's midfield could be a wonderful proposition...

As with most of the squad, Costa's future isn't 100% clear.
Saturday's game was turned on its head in the matter of just a few second half minutes, as first Fabio Borini grabbed an equalizer, then Jermain Defoe scored the winner for Sunderland in just about the next passage of play. The two players most likely to score against Chelsea scoring against Chelsea is perhaps not all that surprising — Borini seems to always do so against his former club (four in a row now), while Defoe's having a throwback season to when he was a much younger man — but the manner in which we conceded them, the lapses of concentration and just general poor play at the back was galling even for this wretched season.

"We started the game well and for the first 30 to 35 minutes we had control and we were playing well. We were creating chances, moving the ball quickly and players wanted to get involved. In the second half we came out and we wanted to carry on where left off but we didn't kill the game when we had the chances to do it."

"Then Ivanovic went down, the referee didn't blow the whistle, we stopped a little and they scored the second goal. From then, they had some momentum, they built on that and got the third goal."

-John Obi Mikel; source: Chelsea FC

I find that last bit especially annoying — "we stopped a little" — not just in the context of this game, but as a general occurrence in football. Referees only stop play for head injuries. Everyone knows this. The other team won't kick the ball out for you just out of the goodness of their hearts, especially when they're fighting to avoid relegation. You play to the whistle. Every. Time.

Sure, we should have won. If Costa scores either of his two great chances, we probably would've won. But we also would've won had we not given up three goals to Sunderland (SUNDERLAND!), a team that hadn't scored a goal at the Stadium of Light since March 1st.

Two more games.

After losing just 1 of his first 27 Premier League matches in charge of Chelsea (over two stints), Guus Hiddink has now lost 3 of his last 5. The magic has fully gone now, one suspects.

The latest loss, against Sunderland, had a rather familiar feel to it, with Chelsea failing to kill off the game when we had the chance(s) and allowing the opponents to come back not just once, but twice, and then even grab a winner as the boys in blue wished wished to disappear into the Wearside misty fog.

"We didn't kill them off and that's the only thing I can criticise. I'm disappointed of course with the result. We like to win every game which is not always possible. We should have scored more in the first half-an-hour and made it two or three nil. We were playing very well but not materialising our chances and so we invited them in to the game which they did by making it 1-1."

"The team reacted at that point very well to make it 2-1 right on half-time. We then had two or three open chances in the second half to make it 3-1. We didn't do that and that let them in to the game. We invited them to get new energy. They were energetic and very well supported by their crowd to get the win which is huge for them."

To cap off the miserable result, John Terry got his marching orders just before the final whistle for a second bookable offense. Unless the captain gets another last-minute contract extension, that will be the last thing he ever does in a Chelsea shirt.

"It's sad he was sent off for a second yellow."

"I think the referee was too close to the incident. Normally we say the ref should be close to what can happen but I think he was too close and he had an impulsive reaction to draw the yellow card. With a bit more distance, maybe 10 yards more, he could have thought ‘hey, these two guys went intensely for a duel'. It was an intense game and you have to consider that. It was a good duel between the two players, there was no intention to hurt. It was a harsh decision and by rule I think he is suspended for two games because it's his second red card."

"Of course we don't know what his future is at this moment. It's sad that he won't be participating in our last game at home, the Leicester game, the champions, a party time let's say."

-Guus Hiddink; source: Chelsea FC

Not often you see referees criticized for being too close to an incident, but there you have it. Judging by reports of Terry's vacant stares and despondent behaviour in the dressing room, chances are he knows that there is no contract extension coming.

Of course no Hiddink press conference would be complete without the mention of saving the club from relegation.

"In December we were in the same position as Sunderland. It was awkward and we managed in a relatively short time to get out of that area and get into ninth or 10th."

"I would have liked us to further and get some silverware, but it was not the case. We have played for our pride but haven't always got the wins."

-Guus Hiddink; source: Sky

I would expect something far better than 2 wins from 10 games in all competitions when playing just for pride, let alone for FA Cup and Champions League glory, but whatever. It's hardly worth getting angry about it at this point. Two games left until the first day of the rest of our Chelsea lives, when things will be better. Probably. At least for a short while.

It's not over until it's over — i.e. still two games left and then a few weeks for all involved to change their minds — but at the moment, it's looking very likely that John Terry's final act as a Chelsea player will be a sending off as time was expiring on a cool and cloudy afternoon in the far north of England. Sunderland had come from behind twice to take a 3-2 lead; Terry's dismissal only added to the sense of palpable disappointment in what should've been, at least for Chelsea, a meaningless match.

Technically, it was the Chelsea captain's second booking of the night, but The FA's red card rules make no distinction in this case with regards to the nature of the red card. It was Terry's second red of the season, after the one he received away to West Bromwich Albion in August, and that means an automatic two-match suspension instead of the usual one, effectively immediately. So Terry will miss the trip to Liverpool in midweek and the final day party with Jamie Vardy and Leicester at Stamford Bridge.

There's still a chance that the situation might change, but we very well could've seen the last of John Terry in a Chelsea shirt.

Not exactly a 'scoring the winning penalty' or 'lifting the Premier League trophy' sort of farewell...

Meh.

Sunderland's second (Borini) and third goals (Defoe), in the span of just two minutes, came while Ivanović was down injured and right after he was replaced by Baba. Confusion and poor play at the back. Two of Sunderland's goals also came from poor clearances, though both Khazri's and Defoe's goals were very well taken, it should be said.

With the win, Sunderland climb out of the relegation zone, Newcastle drop in after a 0-0 draw against Aston Villa. Sunderland also have a game-in-hand.

Chelsea remain 9th as Stoke lose to Crystal Palace.

Fabio Borini now has 4 goals in 6 games against Chelsea. Annoying.

Guus Hiddink used all three of his subs today! Newsworthy.

John Terry's farewell tour continues with a red card. Will miss Liverpool midweek and <strike>should be back for Leicester on the final day. </strike>AND LEICESTER AS WELL SINCE THIS WAS HIS SECOND RED OF TEH SEASON. LOL.

Just two wins in our last ten matches. Losing a lead twice in one game adds to the sense of disappointment. Fortunately, only two more games remain.

Chelsea lead 2-1 after goals from Costa and Matić.

A few bright passages of play early from Chelsea, and while there was a fair slice of luck involved in our goal, it was no less what we deserved — as far as anyone can ever deserve anything on the football pitch. Gary Cahill had stayed forward from a set piece, and it was his flicked pass that was deflected into the path of Diego Costa, who curled a sweet finish from a very tight angle past Vito Mannone.

Chelsea didn't particularly kick on from that point however, and the match petered out into a mostly even affair of half-chances and poor passes. And then out of nowhere, Sunderland's Khazri equalized with a ridiculous finish after Chelsea failed to properly clear the ball. <strike>So 1-1 at the half.</strike>

Overall, a disjointed performance from the boys in Blue. Many are trying, including Eden Hazard and Diego Costa (but as always, the former could use a bit more direct running and the latter could use a little less). Azpilicueta has been a busy man, and Matic has stepped up into attack multiple times. Unfortunately, Fabregas and Willian look behind the pace of play, while Cahill is already flirting with a second yellow.

And then Matic SCORES right on the stroke of half-time and I really don't feel like rewriting any of the above. Like I said, he's been stepping forward effectively. Costa and Azpilicueta combine for the assist.

So, 2-1 Chelsea at the half. Let's see a couple more goals and a few minutes for the youth, please.

COME ON, CHELSEA!
