Judging by the ratings, confidence and mood are at an all-time low. Which is unfortunate, though hardly surprising given the season we've had and the now four-match winless streak.

Having said that, I didn't think Chelsea were particularly terrible in this game, certainly not when compared with some of the season's worst efforts, like the multiple Everton losses, just to mention a more recent example.

When Ramires was sold in January, we had wondered who might replace some of his vital contributions to the Chelsea cause. While we're still looking for the proverbial Energizer bunny in the engine room, we may have found a strong candidate for winning dubious, last-minute penalty kicks. RLC went a bit old-school with the trip your own feet technique, but there's no need to re-invent the wheel when it comes to certain things.

It was a fitting second equalizer for a game that featured a most weird collection of goals, including a wonderstrike, some free kick shenanigans, and Andy "I don't always play but when I do, I prefer to play against Chelsea because somehow they are unable to handle me, like at all" Carroll scoring yet again.

With Diego Costa unavailable, many Chelsea fans thought that today would be the day that they'd finally see Alexandre Pato in the starting lineup. Interim manager Guus Hiddink decided to go with Loic Remy instead, and when he pulled Remy off late in the match, replaced him with Bertrand Traore instead of Pato. The Dutchman was asked about that decision after the match came to a close, and had the following to say:

"You have to make a choice who to bring on. We have now several strikers. When Costa is not there, then we have Remy. We also have Traore and Pato. They are competing for the second position spot. I make my fair judgement on what we see during training as well, and then I take my decision."

Fair enough. Remy has certainly earned the right over the past season and a half to be selected when Costa is out, as he's generally come through with goals. Though raw, Traore has shown a knack for putting the ball in the net as well, even if he looks a little uncomfortable leading the line at the moment. Both of those decisions are understandable, on their own.

Why did Guus decide to bring in Ruben Loftus-Cheek instead of Pato for his last substitution, with Chelsea down a goal late in the match?

"Ruben is strong and he can penetrate. He can also play physically well and technically well, which he proved in this action [for the penalty]."

RLC did very well in his short cameo, and without him and that run, we probably don't salvage a point out of this one. It's hard to find too much fault in the decision to leave Pato on the bench yet again when one of his substitutes changes the match, hindsight being 20/20 and all.

Regardless, at this point, Guus is clearly not impressed with what he's seeing from Pato in training, and seems to be the first manager we've had in quite a while that's willing to play an unproven youngster over a big name in poor (or no) form. I'm fine with that, and I'd imagine Chelsea's academy players are excited to finally see someone willing to take a chance on them as well.

I remember a time 12 months ago when a home draw against West Ham would have been a disappointing result. Those 12 months feel like an eternity. \

On Saturday, Chelsea were outplayed at Stamford bridge by one of their smaller London rivals, but a pair of goals from Cesc Fabregas was enough to limit the damage to a draw. Ultimately, that draw will probably wind up being far more damaging to West Ham's season than it will be to ours.

Guus Hiddink started out with a weaker squad than we're used to seeing, with both Diego Costa and Eden Hazard unavailable. Kenedy started on the left in place of Hazard, while Loic Remy was recalled from the wilderness to lead the line in Costa's stead. In addition, the woefully out-of-form Oscar got a start behind the striker, and a much needed opportunity to get back in the good graces of Chelsea's fans.

The derby kicked off as a surprisingly open affair, probably due in large part to Chelsea having little reason to be conservative, while West Ham really needed three points. Unfortunately for the Blues, that wide open match led to an opener for the visitors, when a tackle from John Obi Mikel (following several poor attempts to clear) fell to the feet of Manuel Lanzini. The Argentine beat Thibaut Courtois with an absolutely sensational shot from about 25 yards out, but with some better initial defending, that shot likely never happens in the first place.

The Blues settled down a bit following the opener, though they looked fairly unlikely to score, with Loic Remy dropping deep or running wide far too often, and no Chelsea players attacking of the open spaces in the middle of the pitch. Fortunately, when given the chance to take a set piece from the left side in place of Willian, Cesc Fabregas delivered a stunner that left Adrian with no chance. It was 1-1 heading into the break, and Chelsea looked to have a bit of life.

The second half saw one enforced change, with Kenedy making way for Pedro before the action resumed. The 20-year old was struck in the face as the first 45 minutes neared their conclusion, and though he was able to get patched up and finish out the half, Guus decided to make the switch during the intermission.

Chelsea looked better after the break, but some typically calamitous defending some them fall behind again just after the hour mark. Gary Cahill managed to break the high line and play on the newly substituted Andy Carroll, while Branislav Ivanovic ignored Cahill's attempt to pass off the center forward. One Dimitri Payet pass later, and Carroll was one on one with Courtois, who wasn't able to do anything with a relatively tame effort.

Hiddink made two more changes as the Blues chased the result, bringing Bertrand Traore on for Remy, and giving Ruben Loftus-Cheek a cameo when the woeful Oscar was removed. The latter would wind up winning a controversial penalty just minutes after coming on, when he made a brilliant run that Willian picked out, only to be brought down on the edge of the penalty area. Replay seemed to confirm that RLC was actually outside the box when he was tripped, but given the rotten luck we've had with referees this season, I'll take it.

The Blues will now have two weeks off to get rested and healthy, and we'll probably hear a decision on Diego Costa's suspension during that international break. Eight more to play...

The return of John Terry to the Chelsea starting lineup wasn't enough to cure our defensive woes. Several instances of sloppy defending were punished in a 2-2 draw with West ham and frankly, the Blues were lucky they didn't wind up conceding one or two more.

The draw certainly wasn't the result that any of us were hoping for, but watching late substitute Ruben Loftus-Cheek make a great run and earn the leveling penalty absolutely made my week. With any luck, that was enough to earn the kid a few starts after the international break, as he just has to be an improvement over the corpse of Oscar at the moment.

Thoughts:

Why do we always get Tony Gale for Chelsea matches? He somehow manages to get worse at his job every single week.

I really have no idea what happened to Oscar in the past 18 months, but it's painful to watch. Maybe we should have taken that money from China...

Hopefully Kenedy isn't hurt too badly, and won't be forced to wear a mask going forward.

Remember when we used to regularly trouble opponents from corners? It's funny how fast that danger disappears when you take away the bulk of your size and athleticism, and replace those guys with tricky little hobbits.

It's amazing how a defensive foursome that was so good last season has completely forgotten how to communicate. The sequence of defensive errors that led to Andy Carroll ended up being free on Chelsea's goal was both hilarious and depressing, and perfectly sums up Chelsea's season, as far as I'm concerned.

Speaking of Carroll's goal, Thibaut Courtois has to save that. He looked very shaky all day, and was probably a bit lucky that he conceded as few as he did.

I'm almost looking forward to the international break, even though I hate international friendlies. It's sad when the fans need some time to rest and recuperate.

All hail Ruben Loftus-Cheek!

Make no mistake about it, Chelsea haven't been any better through the first 45 minutes against West Ham than they have in several weeks. The visiting Hammers have looked far more dangerous than Guus Hiddink's side, but somehow, it's 1-1 at the break.

West Ham scored the opener with a wonderfully struck ball, that left Thibaut Courtois with absolutely no chance of keeping the ball out of the net. Cesc Fabregas sneakily moved a free kick back in stoppage time, however, and then used the extra two yards to his advantage, putting a wonderful strike of his own beyond the West Ham keeper.

In addition to the goal, the Blues had a very legitimate shout for a penalty, a handball which wasn't called, as has been the case far too often this season. Maybe we're just saving up all the calls for next season, right?

Anyway, 45 minutes to play, with three points still on the table. Up the Blues!

It's unusual when Chelsea play games in mid-March with little to no pressure, but that's what we've been reduced to this season. Chelsea take on West Ham on Saturday at Stamford Bridge, and while the players and manager all certainly want to win, and still have a remote shot at finishing in the Europa League places, there's not likely to be the usual backlash if they don't, as the fans have seemingly accepted that this season is basically over.

That said, Antonio Conte is definitely watching this group closely, before he takes charge at the end of Euro 2016. For fringe players and youngsters, these nine matches offer a wonderful opportunity to impress the new manager, and Guus Hiddink has claimed he'll be giving some of those youngsters chances as the season winds down.

Here's the lineup Guus has opted to go with today, which has little youth involved:

Fortunately, Hiddink has named a few youngsters to the bench:

Chelsea kick off a meaningless nine-match run to end the 2015/16 on Saturday, against a West Ham United side that still have their sights set on a Champions League place. In all honesty, that was one of the strangest sentences that I've ever typed.

For the Blues, this nine-match spell should be a chance to work some fringe players into the mix, and give incoming manager Antonio Conte some Premier League film on each of them. Players like Baba Rahman, Kenedy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Bertrand Traore should all see plenty of time as the Blues close out their season, especially with injuries taking a bit of a toll, and certain players needing a bit of a rest before a European championship summer.

While it wouldn't surprise me at all to see more youngsters getting minutes as the season winds down, my predicted lineup for this one only has Traore starting from the group mentioned above. We'll see if that prove accurate or not, but I'd be pretty surprised to see Chelsea start resting the veterans this early, especially with an international break following this round of fixtures.
