Chelsea remain unbeaten under manager Guus Hiddink after their draw against Watford at Vicarage Road last night, but the result still left many fans in anger due to how poorly the Blues played for the most part of the match. Still, the team could have won the match if it weren't for a couple of terrific saves by Watford goalkeeper Gomes, whom Thibaut Courtois praised after the match.

"He's a very good goalkeeper and he proved that, the last save from Diego was terrific and he saved them the points. That save was really good; it was a close-range header, I was in line with the ball and I thought it was going in but then I saw his arm going across. We're not happy, we had the biggest chances and Gomes made two big saves."

Happy or not, it's time to move on and shift focus onto the big weekend clash against Manchester United. Much like last night's result, our trip to Old Trafford in December was a disappointingly conservative one, with the team seemingly settling for the scoreless draw. This time, maybe we'll actually go for the three points in actions, too, not just words.

"We cannot be happy with a point but it was a solid performance. It was a game where they were solid at the back and when we tried to play the ball into midfield they put pressure on us so it wasn't easy to find the gaps. It was a close game, in the end I think we had the better chances. Gomes made two big saves and it could have been three points for us."

"Being unbeaten is always important but obviously we would have preferred to win than draw. We could have won, it's a pity we didn't but now we have an important game against Manchester United. We want to win every game and move up the table, it's another big one."

Manchester United are coming off a 3-0 win against Stoke City at Old Trafford, with Anthony Martial once again looking dangerous and looking to build his confidence back up.
Oh, and there was that Costa thing, too, which really should be called a Paredes thing, but that doesn't sell as well.

Not exactly a match to be enshrined in the Chelsea museum and history books, this one. Or even talked about for too long. One point gained, two points lost, it hardly even matters. Obviously, on the Internet everything matters and football is life or death, but in the grand scheme of things, well ... it's whatever.

Of course it's disappointing. Disappointing for the fans, disappointing for the players, disappointing for the manager. Disappointing. It's a bit of a theme.

Chelsea could've easily lost the game in the first half, and could've easily won the game in the second. Neither came to pass. Ninety minutes of entirely forgettable football. Meaningless minutes, meaningless matches, meaningless words?

"It's been a difficult half-year for the team, but step by step we are getting more and more our way of how we like to play. Also we like to see that we created chances and we are recently doing better and better. We were not rewarded as we should have been rewarded but this is not a league where you can easily win."

One day, all this improving will eventually translate to consistent wins. Maybe.

Perhaps the biggest criticism leveled at Hiddink today, other than his once again flaring reluctance to not only throw on the kids when there's very little to lose but also to actually use all his subs, was his delay in introducing Eden Hazard. An obvious move that unsurprisingly changed the entire complexion of the match, yet one only made in the final 15 minutes. The interim manager defended his decision afterwards.

Given the non-event of the rest of the match, perhaps it's understandable that the flashpoint between Costa and Paredes is the headline that the media has latched onto. It's a massive cliche at this point, though probably not wrong, but if that's anybody else other than Costa, it's probably relegated to the scrapheap like the rest of this match. The Chelsea striker, for his part, hardly did anything wrong, answering a standard petty shove with a petty shove of his own, at which point Paredes tried to win his Academy Award. Hiddink called out the Watford man after the match (as did Watford captain Troy Deeney), for whatever those are worth (absolutely nothing).

"It was very clear because we were very close - it was just 10 yards from our bench. He's punched Diego in his back and after they stumbled. Then Parades has brought his hands to his head, but Diego was nowhere near his head. This is something you must not do - provocation to get someone sent off the pitch. Happily the referee and the assistant referee saw it."

"Diego was calm. In the incident, he was in control, and also at half-time he was very controlled. There was nothing needed from me or from the other players to calm him down."

Where there's Costa, there's drama. Expect Diego's reputation to take another hit of course, regardless of what actually happened, but that's just how it goes. There are no appeals in the court of public opinion.

0-0, 90-plus minutes into a match where all the recent chances had fallen Chelsea's way is normally the cue for a last, frantic stab at goal. In a season where something was on the line, the Blues would have poured forward to find a winner. They probably wouldn't have found one -- last-gasp goals are difficult to score* -- but they might at least be expected to provide a glimmer of hope. This Chelsea, on the other hand, opted to do nothing.

*Unless you are notorious hero Salomon Kalou.

In their defence, the final 20 minutes, mysteriously coinciding with the introduction of Eden Hazard, were almost entirely competent. Branislav Ivanovic and Diego Costa both found themselves denied by fine saves from Heurelio Gomes, and Watford had started to creak under the strain. The first 70 were completely forgettable (and in truth I've already forgotten most of them), but there was some promise. For a little while. But then, when push came to shove, we collectively gave up and went home, content with a point from Vicarage Road.

A point! A draw! A clean sheet! The team has recalibrated itself rather well to its new situation, apparently striving for the results you'd expect from a mid-table non-entity, but it's been difficult for fans to adjust to this new reality. Seeing Chelsea obviously and clearly settle for a draw against Watford, away or not, is depressing. Or would be, if the rest of the season hadn't already turned the depression dials to 11.

The first half was dreadful. Chelsea had no fluency, and were perhaps fortunate not to concede. Loose balls were dropping to yellow shirts rather than blue, and the only competent attacking move we produced (Oscar came up with an extraordinary turn to find space in the box) was called back for a Costa foul off the ball. Meanwhile the Hornets were peppering Thibaut Courtois with shots. There weren't many real chances, but Watford were doing enough to be far more worried about them scoring than hopeful that we'd find the net.

The closest Chelsea can was completely against the run of play when Oscar punted, long and hopeful, toward Costa. Given not much to work with, he managed to turn Sebastian Prödl and squeeze off a shot, but unfortunately it took a deflection and trickled beyond the far post.

The chosen talking point from the game is of course Costa's 45th-minute encounter with Hornets right back Juan Paredes. Never has a mountain been so effectively made of a molehill. During a Chelsea throw-in, Paredes knocked Costa down with a shove and was repaid in kind shortly thereafter, but Mike Dean chose that as His Moment, taking a full three minutes to issue bookings to both parties. Parades' hilarious writhing around on the turf was also a highlight.

Chelsea were better after the interval but hardly good. John Obi Mikel forced a silly save with a deflected effort, Nemanja Matic send a thoroughly competent volley right down Gomes' throat and Oscar trickled a close-range shot wide after impressive play from Costa. Meanwhile, the issues in midfield and defence had been more or less resolved, with Fabregas in particular stepping up to plug the holes Watford had been exploiting before the break. We were also treated to Oscar crushing a pass into Mike Dean's groin, presumably avenging the treatment of his father.

The Blues' toothlessness had an obvious solution: Eden Hazard. His introduction had turned the game around when these team met at Stamford Bridge (let's ignore the result of the penalty he won), and it seemed obvious that throwing him on for the shambling corpse of Matic would put Watford under a bit of pressure. Thanks to the need to nurse his recent injury, that substitution was delayed and delayed and delayed.

Finally everyone got what they wanted. Fabregas dropped back, Oscar came off the wing and Hazard began driving at the Hornets. Chelsea looked competent again. Within minutes, some smart work had set up Ivanovic only for Gomes to fly out and make a fine save; later the Belgian allowed a Willian pass to get away while the goal gaped ahead of him. Still later a smart cross was met just late by Costa, whose twisting attempt to guide the ball home at the far post found only the side netting.

The best chance of all, however, had little to do with Hazard. A Willian corner landed in just the right spot, and Costa got enough on a contested header to send it floating towards the far corner. Gomes looked lost, too far away to make the save even if he was able to get a touch on it. But he flew across goal and clawed the ball away just before it crossed the line, condemning us to that 0-0 draw.

At this point everyone gave up. So shall I.

Well, that was far from pretty.

Chelsea had the better of things in the second half, and it could even be fair to say we dominated the final quarter of an hour, but eventually we had to settle for the scoreless draw.

The best Chelsea performance on the day came from the traveling fans. Good show, despite silly things such as this.

Clean sheet for Courtois, which is always nice. Would not have bet on that based on the defense's first-half performance, that's for sure.

Chelsea fail to score for the first time in 2016. Gomes did pull off a ridiculously good/lucky save from Ivanovic in the 78th minute. Substitute Eden Hazard played a large role in creating that chance. Hazard himself could've scored from a Willian cross, but the touch was too heavy and the goalkeeper collected. Gomes then one-upped himself in the final few minutes, saving a point-blank Costa header, too.

Oscar needs better, non-slippy boots, especially against Watford.

With the draw, Chelsea move back to 13th and are now unbeaten in 10. But with only 4 wins. Better, but really not that good.

I guess the good news is that we haven't conceded. Yet. We don't look anywhere close to scoring, unfortunately, and if the match continues in the second half as it has in the first, there's only going to be one winner here. And it won't be us.

The alternating sequences of aimless Chelsea possession and Ighalo threatening at the other end were interrupted once by a route one chance for Diego Costa (there's joy to be found in that long ball), but unfortunately his shot deflected off Cathcart, just barely, but enough to squirt wide of the far post. While Chelsea did show tiny signs of life in the final 10-15 minutes, it's been largely uninspiring, slow, and inaccurate from the Blues.

At the other end, Terry and Zouma are generally at sea and rather fearful of Ighalo and Deeney, while if Paredes or Jurado or even Holebas come forward on the wings, we have little answer. Luckily enough, Ighalo seems to get more things wrong than right, and so we survive. For now.

And then there's Diego Costa sideshow. I have no idea what's gone on between him and Paredes, but it's got a bit of a storm in a teacup feel to it. Costa now has a yellow, so maybe toe that line a bit more safely in the second half?

Anyway, onwards and upwards. 45 minutes to win it.

Chelsea look to make it 10-in-a-row unbeaten at Vicarage Road tonight. Watford are struggling, Chelsea are gaining confidence, so there is only one possible outcome here, right?

(5-5 draw.)

The one slightly unexpected move from Guus Hiddink is to start with Hazard on the bench and Oscar and Willian flanking Cesc Fabregas in the no.10 role. Otherwise, it's the obvious lineup (and bench choices).

UP THE CHELS!

Chelsea look to remain unbeaten in ten straight as we visit Vicarage Road for a league match for the first time in almost a decade.

And so, we enter February. The doldrums. Calm winds. Sudden storms. Hoping we don't run out of fresh water.

This time last year, the emphasis was on slow and steady. Protect the lead at the top of the table and prize shall be ours. And so we did and so it was. Boring, boring Champions.

We could use a bit more calm winds this time around as well, through with entirely different aims in mind. Top four is out, practically, if not mathematically (yet), and any designs of glory should be concentrated at the FA Cup and the Champions League. As bleak as the season's been, there's every chance of another 2012 still.

In a couple weeks, we'll have PSG (away) and Manchester City (home) in back-to-back cup dates. Until then, here's to smooth sailing.

Date / Time: Wednesday, February 3, 2016, 19:45 GMT; 2:45pm EST; 1:15am IST (next day)

Venue: Vicarage Road, Watford, England

Referee: Mike Dean — It's only the second time this season that we'll get to see the man who's refereed more Chelsea matches than anyone else in history. This will match #60 for Mr. Dean; Chelsea have won 38 and lost 9 of the previous 59, including the 2-0 win over Arsenal in September. (For those curious, Graham Poll's second at 52; Phil Dowd a distant third at 42.)

Forecast: Increasingly cloudy and cold

Watford team news: Since we last saw Watford a little over a month ago, they've won just 1 of their 5 league matches, the one win coming against relegation-threatened Newcastle. The Hornets also beat Newcastle in the FA Cup and then advanced to the fifth round by squeaking past lower league Nottingham Forest. And so while Odion Ighalo continues to score goals at an almost Jamie Vardy-esque pace, Watford's excellent late-autumn/early-winter run is the stuff of memory now. That's not to say they should be taken lightly — they remain defensively sound and you never know when or from where Ighalo or Deeney will pop up with a goal.

Watford have essentially zero injuries, though will be without Chelsea loanee and first-choice left back Nathan Ake, who will be ineligible as per league rules. New signing Mario Suarez could make his debut. The former Atletico man is on loan from Fiorentina and is probably a very shrewd and very good signing for the club.

Chelsea team news: No new boys are expected to make their debuts just yet, and Hiddink will also be without backup strikers Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao. Willian is a concern and will probably be a game-time decision depending on how his bruised foot feels.

Over the weekend, Chelsea opened the floodgates on poor hapless MK Dons, scoring five and missing five more in a five-star rout. It was our ninth match in a row without a loss, and third successive away victory. Incidentally, Watford already have featured in this unbeaten run, in match #2, which only ended as a draw thanks to a missed penalty from Oscar and two rather unfortunate goals conceded by Chelsea.

Previously: This is Watford's first season back in the top flight since 2007. That year, Salomon Kalou scored a dramatic late goal in our visit to Vicarage Road.
