Chelsea lose on the day, but advance to the Round of 16 on away goals after the two sides finish 2-2 on aggregate.

Chelsea were looking good when Fran Kirby scored on the counter — great ball over the top from Bachmann, who literally ran herself into the ground — but then suddenly everything went to pieces. Kirby got injured. Blundell got injured. Bachmann was cramping in both legs. Thorisdottir picked up a knock. Bayern got level on the day thanks to an unlucky own goal on a corner. They scored again soon after when Lindahl spilled a long-range effort and Bayern were first to the rebound.

There were 7 minutes left, plus 6 (SIX!) added-on.

Bright got away with a handball. Then Bayern scored, but was ruled out for a push in the box.

Chelsea survived.

And advanced.

The Round of 16 beckons.

  • Chelsea were unchanged from last week, but not quite as effective
  • Bayern dominated most of play, possession, but Chelsea advance, and that’s all that matters.
  • The draw for the Round of 16 will be held on Monday (Oct 16), with matches taking place during the next FIFA international break in early November.
