Let’s get it

Your friendly neighborhood Best Women’s Team in England are inching ever closer to a return to the pitch. As the unstoppable march of time ensures, a new season is just around the corner, the beginning of which is now close enough to have details attached.

Chelsea FCW’s first preseason friendly will take place in a little less than three weeks, against Arsenal at The Emirates.

How’s that for no mucking about? First match, first day of August, against our annoying and red London rival, away, in their 60,000-seat stadium, with only their home fans allowed in the stadium. Chelsea manager Emma Hayes always speaks of building character, and even though preseason matches can largely be ignored in terms of results, this one has enough attached to it to make that difficult.

However, with the Olympics kicking off in just over a week’s time, and the women’s football tournament set to end August 6, the Blues will surely be without a not-insignificant number of players. Millie Bright, Niamh Charles, Sophie Ingle, Fran Kirby, Carly Telford (Team GB); captain Magdalena Eriksson, Jonna Andersson, Zećira Mušović (Sweden); Jess Fleming (Canada); Aniek Nouwen (Netherlands); and Sam Kerr (Australia) are all unlikely to feature.

Still, the new season is getting closer and that’s reason to get excited!
