This morning, Chelsea confirmed the signing of 22-year-old center back Aniek Nouwen from Dutch champions PSV.
That’s right, fresh off of lifting the WSL trophy and even before Sunday’s Women’s Champions League Final, Emma Hayes and Chelsea found time to preempt everyone’s (read: my) postseason observations by securing a new signing in an area of need. Nouwen is a right-footed center back who made her senior team debut for the Netherlands national team five days before her twentieth birthday.
Nouwen is a highly skilled and highly sought-after defender who’s progressed steadily throughout her already lengthy Eredivisie career. She made her debut for PSV when at just 16-years-old and has racked up over 100 appearances as a mainstay of their back line.
The successful recruitment of Nouwen not only addresses much-needed center back depth, but she is at a perfect age and stage of progression to make the leap to the next level as the understudy of Millie Bright and Chelsea captain Magdalena Eriksson — two of the best in the WSL.
Welcome to Chelsea, Aniek Nouwen!
Also, shoutout to Aniek’s TikTok game, which chronicles her career so far and her next big step to Chelsea.
