Having dispatched Atlético Madrid in the Round of 16, thanks in part to Atléti failing to convert not one, not two, but three penalties over the course of the two legs, Chelsea’s reward is to face perennial powerhouse Wolfsburg in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Champions League.
Wolfsburg, who are currently just second behind perfect Bayern (15-for-15!) in the Frauen Bundesliga, finished runners-up in this competition last season, and we had the misfortune to face them three years running in 2016, 2017, and 2018, as they knocked us out of Europe all three times (in the Round of 16, the Round of 32, and the semifinals, respectively).
So, it’s payback time.
Chelsea have reached the semifinals each of the last two times we played in the Champions League, losing to Lyon in 2019 and not participating last year. If we are to do so again, we have to overcome the big bad Wolf ... sburg. (And we now have one of their key players among our number, with Pernille Harder joining last summer!)
The 2020-21 Women’s Champions League quarterfinal draw, in full, is as follows. The first legs will be played in two weeks (March 23-24), with the second leg to follow the week after.
Bayern Munich vs. Rosengard
Sparta Prague OR PSG vs. Lyon
Barcelona vs. Manchester City
Chelsea vs. Wolfsburg
