A well-deserved reward for a phenomenal debut season

Guro Reiten, come on down! After Bethany England and Erin Cuthbert agreed to contract extensions, Guro Reiten, who arrived at Chelsea just last summer, has now done the same. Reiten’s new deal is good through 2023.

This is fantastic news not only because she had a remarkable debut season, but because Chelsea are quite clearly increasing players’ salaries as reward for a terrific season. Contract details are not public, so I cannot confirm this, but there are only a few logical reasons why you would extend the contract of a player who just played one season (also it would be silly for that player to agree to extend for the exact same terms).

Paying great players for being great is good.

For Reiten more specifically, immediately breaking into the Chelsea starting XI and becoming just as invaluable as any other member of the attacking line is a remarkable achievement. But Guro was even better than that. She led the team in assists (7) and was the team’s third highest scorer (5; after England’s 14 and Ji’s 6).

This might not have been a surprise given that she was plucked from serial Norwegian champions LSK Kvinner FK, where in 53 appearances from 2017-2019 she scored 51 goals, but you don’t have to watch her long before coming to the conclusion that her left foot is made of advanced circuitry.

Let Reiten’s assist for Sam Kerr’s first goal in the WSL explain:

In addition to her remarkable left foot, Reiten also has the vision and creativity to maximize her skill and technique. With Chelsea’s direct attackers, Reiten fits perfectly as a player that can float around the outside of the box as an outlet to relieve pressure, provide service, or do something like this:

Congrats to Guro, and let’s go win more stuff!
