Chelsea have made a major power move in the women’s game by signing superstar Sam Kerr, who will join the Blues on a 2.5-year deal when the midseason transfer window opens on December 27.
The Ballon d’Or nominee, who had been linked with a host of clubs including back-to-back-to-back-to-back Women’s Champions League winners Lyon, will wear shirt No.20.
Kerr had been a free agent since announcing her intentions to leave the Chicago Red Stars at the end of the NWSL season (last month) and look for opportunities in Europe. She had also been playing back home in her native Australia, for Perth Glory (the NWSL and W-League seasons do not overlap, so this way she was able to play year-round). She left both leagues as their all-time leading goalscorer!
The 26-year-old was first linked with Chelsea during last summer’s Women’s World Cup, where she captained Australia into the Last 16. Now she’s here, and ready to win some trophies, as Chelsea DNA dictates.
“The WSL is the best league in Europe. I want team success and I don’t want it to come easy. I feel Chelsea have been building something special over the years and I want to be a part of that – I want to lift some trophies.”

She is a massive signing, and probably the biggest transfer ever for the team.
“Sam has proved time and time again in the NWSL that she is a prolific goalscorer. She’s won the golden boot many times and she’s a player that can make things happen, but she’s also a fantastic team player.
“The fact she chose Chelsea when she could have gone to any club in the world is a testament to the players and the staff here because she saw this is the best place for her to grow and take the next step in her career. That’s a wonderful compliment to us all.”

Welcome, Sam. Let’s win some things!
