Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea agree Ian Maatsen loan move — reports

Here we go

Underutilized Chelsea left back Ian Maatsen looks to be heading to Germany shortly — well, Spain, where Borussia Dortmund are having their winter training camp — with a loan deal now reportedly agreed between the two teams. The medical is expected to take place today (Tuesday).

Maatsen was among the players most likely to leave this January, and it would seem that he’s wasted no time in doing so. We had already accepted a transfer offer for him in the summer, but he opted against going back to Burnley.

Surprisingly, according to German media (via Fear The Wall), the agreement with Dortmund doesn’t have either an obligation or an option to make the deal permanent. While a permanent move may yet be the eventual outcome, the transfer fee would have to be negotiated separately. For now, BVB are only covering Maatsen’s full wages.

The 21-year-old’s Chelsea contract was extended earlier this season by a year, to 2025, with the club picking up the one-year extension option on it. But that has proven to be a move aimed mostly at protecting his value, as he’s started just three games all season, with a dozen substitute appearances thrown in as well, for less than 400 minutes of action in total.

At this point it’s unclear how we’ll make room for him among the seven (7) maximum allowed foreign loanees. (Nothing official has happened with either David Datro Fofana, Diego Moreira, Hakim Ziyech, or Romelu Lukaku, while Gaga Slonina, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Ângelo Gabriel are unlikely to be recalled.)
