Chelsea ‘long-term admirers’ of Brighton’s Evan Ferguson — report

Of course we are

A new name has popped up in the Chelsea rumor mill, and the only surprise is that it hasn’t popped up earlier. According to the Evening Standard, we are “interested” in Evan Ferguson, Brighton & Hove Albion’s young striker.

We’re supposedly “long-term admirers” of the 19-year-old, which makes perfect sense (despite the ironic juxtaposition of “long-term” and “19-year-old”) considering that pretty much the same recruitment people are in place at Chelsea now as were at Brighton back in 2021, when Ferguson signed from Bohemians in the League of Ireland.

That connection aside, Ferguson had already caught the eye of Premier League big fish with his breakout season last year, when he scored 10 goals. He’s on pace to better that this season, though not by a significant amount (he has 6 so far). So yeah, another project player at this point, for anyone willing to spend the many, many, many millions (£80-100m?) it would take to get Brighton to the negotiating table.

That’s a familiar song and dance for us after the last couple years, with ... questionable ... returns, so maybe we can try a different track this time. Don’t let the record skip, the record skip.
