As expected, Chelsea have recalled David Datro Fofana from his loan at Union Berlin.
While the 21-year-old striker had made 17 appearances for the struggling Bundesliga outfit, including 11 starts, he had managed just 2 goals in all competitions, and at one point got into a bit of a thing with the head coach. Although that head coach, Urs Fischer was finally sacked a couple months ago, all in all, it was not a happy situation.
Fofana’s recall also opens up a foreign-loan spot among the maximum of seven allowed by FIFA, which should now enable Ian Maatsen’s move to Borussia Dortmund that had been stuck in a bit of limbo for the last few days.
It’s unclear what Fofana’s next move might be. (Also struggling) Sevilla have been linked, but we’re now once again full-up in our foreign-loan allowance, so something would have to change before that could happen.
Of course, Fofana could also just stay with us and perhaps offer another option at striker. He may not be an Osimhen, but maybe he could still contribute at a position of need.
