Chelsea ‘open talks’ to sign Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice — report

The January transfer window is a few hours old, so we’re well overdue for our first transfer rumor of the month. Of course, we’ve had plenty already leading up to it, but Silly Season is now officially underway, so let the floodgates open.

So, first up is a story from Foot Mercato, who can be pretty accurate when it comes to Ligue 1 players, though anytime anyone claims an “exclusive”, it’s almost a knock against their credibility. In any case, they claim that Chelsea have “opened talks” with OGC Nice to sign center back Jean-Clair Todibo.

As with previous center back rumors (i.e. Ousmane Diomande), it’s not at all clear why we would need another center back at the moment. Sure, Thiago Silva isn’t getting younger, but he’s presumably still with us until the end of the season, at which point Wesley Fofana should be back. And while this guy’s initials may read JT, we’ve got a JT-regen in our midst already!

Todibo just turned 24, so he does fit our current m.o. He’s been back in France for the last three years, after a move to Barcelona from Toulouse didn’t quite pan out, and has been ever-present for the surprise top-four contenders (sitting second currently, thanks in part to ex-Chelsea players Jérémie Boga and Marcin Bułka). Todibo may hold the league record for the fastest red card (9 seconds!) but he’s a big man with solid physical and technical skills and a key part of the best defense in France this season. He’s been linked with a Premier League move for some time (Tottenham, Manchester United, etc), so now it’s our turn at the pump I guess.
