It’s always amusing when a transfer rumor gets labeled as “exclusive”, especially when it’s a transfer rumor we’ve heard several times not only in the last few months, but also in the last few transfer windows. Breaking news!
So, Matt Hughes of the Daily Mail brings us the “shock” exclusive of Chelsea “considering” the sale of Conor Gallagher in January, which if you have a memory just bit longer than that of a gnat, you will have remembered from last summer, the summer before last summer, and last January as well. Everton and Newcastle United were supposedly the most interested before, now it’s Tottenham Hotspur. Again. Other variations with different destinations, such as West Ham United or Crystal Palace (his former loan club), also exist.
The one thing that has changed (or not changed, as it were) is Gallagher’s contract situation. He will be entering the final 18 months of his deal, which means that we are indeed facing a decision regarding his future. Publicly, he’s maintained confidence that a new contract might get worked out, but there’s been no progress reported. And obviously we’ve not been averse to him leaving for the previous 18 months already.
That said, letting Gallagher go would probably be a big mistake — he has been one of the few bright spots for this forgettable season; been made the captain of the team in the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell; and without whom our midfield have struggled even more... — but if you’re counting the beans and balancing the sheets, his FFP value is one of the highest on the team. Pure profit, baby! The next half-dozen overpriced teenagers on decade-long contracts ain’t gonna buy themselves!
Chelsea consider shock January sale of Conor Gallagher to raise funds for new signings with club close to spending breach. Selling homegrown player would provide PSR headroom, but risk fan backlash. Gallagher yet to agree new contract with 18 months left. https://t.co/2YUq7J9pMx— Matt Hughes (@MattHughesDM) December 11, 2023
