It was exactly ten years ago to the day that Romelu Lukaku underwent a medical at Chelsea ahead of his official unveiling ten days later (though he had been training with the club throughout that time already), and according to reports, he’s doing the same thing again today. Hopefully we won’t have to wait ten more days to make things official this time!

Aug 8, 2011: Lukaku medical
Aug 18, 2011: Lukaku announced

Not that his return is in any real doubt at the moment, but as earlier today we got confirmation of sorts from a rather beautiful source as well, as Didier Drogba took to Twitter to announce Romelu’s homecoming.

Didier may or may not have personal knowledge of what’s happening with the transfer, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. At the very least, this is confirmation of what this transfer means to the club, and to the players involved directly and tangentially.

Lukaku was always seen as Drogba’s long-term successor at Chelsea — note: not the “new” or “next” Drogba, but the heir to Drogba — and it looks like that might just become true at long last!

Here we go!
