After taking on one Chelsea castoff, Reading FC are reportedly “in talks” for another. Left back Baba Rahman recently joined the Championships side on a season-long loan, and he could be followed by Danny Drinkwater.
According to the Reading Chronicle, the Royals are willing to offer the 31-year-old midfielder an opportunity to play some football this season, and in return are hoping for a bit of “generosity” from Chelsea in the form of a wage subsidy.
Ideally, we’d find a team willing to take on at least Drinkwater’s full wages, but there’s been little, if any interest this summer in the midfielder whose career has taken a precipitous dive since joining Chelsea in 2017. He’s made just 23 appearances for the Blues, and just 17 across three loan spells combined in the last two years, and with more than his fair share of off-pitch incidents as well.
Drinkwater’s been trying to find a late renaissance to a career that had once reached the heights of the Premier League. Reading might be a great option for him.
