Ethan Ampadu may be training with the first-team (as opposed to, the reserves or the loan group) but there’s still a decent chance he goes out on loan for the season rather than scrap for spare minutes at Stamford Bridge. In theory, the former should be a better option for his development and career.
According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle United just might be willing to give him that option — especially after giving up four goals to West Ham in the first game of the season — and have thus made a “loan inquiry” for the 20-year-old defender/midfielder. The report expects Chelsea to be agreeable, though we might want to extent Ampadu’s contract first. His current deal has two years to go.
Ampadu spent last season at Sheffield United, earning plenty of Premier League experience though at the very wrong end of the table as Chris Wilder’s side fell away quickly and sunk like a stone back to the Championship. He’s also spent a season at RB Leipzig, though he didn’t play nearly as much then. He does have a dozen appearances for Chelsea already, though he might have to wait another year to potentially add to that tally.
#NUFC looking into potential loan deal for Chelsea centre-half. Sounds like it’s loans only for Newcastle in the rest of the window after the Willock deal… https://t.co/PlAHSqzKFI
