Young Chelsea full back Ian Maatsen will spend the season on loan at Coventry City, joining the Championship side today after a brief time spent training with the first-team this summer.

It feels like Maatsen has been around for some time, but he’s still just 19 and is under contract for three more years. This is the second loan of his young career, after a successful year at Charlton Athletic last season, a division below.

Maatsen is nominally a left back, but he’s starting to show some great versatility at the senior level, putting in several good performances on either flank, and in more attacking wing roles as well — from where he even scored his first career goal towards the end of last season. We’ll see how Coventry head coach Mark Robins utilizes him in the coming season.

The Sky Blues are coming off their highest league finish for 15 years and will be looking to solidify their place in the Championship.

Good luck, Ian!
