Chelsea Academy goalkeeper Jamie Cumming has today joined League One (i.e. third division) Gillingham on a season-long loan.
This is the second loan for the 21-year-old, following a successful spell at fourth division Stevenage last season. He had been one of the four goalkeepers training with the first-team this summer (Lucas Bergström the other youngster), including on the recent trip to Ireland, but will now instead compete with fellow summer arrival Aaron Chapman, ten years his senior, at The Gills.
“Jamie is an exceptional goalkeeper and last season was exceptional in League 2. He comes with no promises of game time, he will need to earn the right because Aaron Chapman has made a very impressive start.
“Jamie is very highly regarded at Chelsea and we are delighted they see Gillingham Football Club as a route for the lad to develop further.”

Cumming is halfway through the four-year deal he signed in 2019, and like most of his fellow Academy graduates at the position, is using the lower reaches of the football pyramid to help develop his game (rather than the more cushy opportunities closer to home).
Good luck, Jamie!
