Another youngster’s leaving, though this time only on loan, as Chelsea and Coventy City have reportedly agreed a season-long loan for Ian Maatsen. The 19-year-old left back-midfielder-winger (is there a word to describe these modern types who are capable of playing anywhere up and down a flank?) is set to join the second division side next week, as per The Athletic’s transfer tracker.
Maatsen did not travel with the Chelsea first-team to training camp in Ireland, and while initial reports put that down to a possible medical reason, it may have actually been with a view towards a potential loan move.
The former PSV prospect has three years left on the long-term Chelsea contract he signed last year, so there should be no concerns in that regard. As per the report, he’s being seen by the Blues as a highly promising youngster, and we’re hoping that he will continue to take strong strides in his development at the mid-table Championship side over the next twelve months.
