Emerson has been linked off and on with Napoli over the past year, if not longer, just as he’s been linked with most of the top teams in the Italian Serie A during that time. And since his situation at Chelsea has not improved and doesn’t look to be improving anytime soon, those links have only gotten stronger — especially as he now has just one year left on his Chelsea contract.
Napoli’s latest interest comes on the heels of appointing Emerson’s former coach at Roma, Luciano Spalletti as their new head coach. Initial speculation along the lines of Spalletti being able to potentially convince Emerson to join him in Naples has now turned into a claim form Gazzetta dello Sport (via Inside Futbol) that the Chelsea left back is now the priority target of Napoli for the summer.
As always, the financials are the biggest hurdle, with Emerson’s wages too much for the Partenopei — so he would need to either agree to a paycut or the two teams would need to work out some sort of subsidy or some such. Time to get creative!
