After a strong season on loan, and plenty of plaudits including from head coach Vincent Kompany, Chelsea center back Matt Miazga was expecting to stay at RSC Anderlecht permanently. While the team didn’t have a buy-option built into the loan contract, it sounded like all parties involved were looking to make some sort of deal happen.
Alas, according to the latest reports out of Belgium, that deal won’t be happening anymore. Anderlecht have “abandoned plans” to sign the 25-year-old USA international, according to HLN (via Sport Witness). While Anderlecht might consider another loan, with Miazga out of contract at Chelsea next summer, that’s not a feasible solution. And a transfer is out of the question for the side who finished only fourth in the Belgian top flight, where “resources remain limited”.
So, back to the drawing board for Miazga then, who’s done well at Vitesse, Reading, and now Anderlecht over the years, but has yet to catch on for good anywhere.
