Inter Milan to seek €120m for Chelsea target Romelu Lukaku — report

Steep, but expected

Former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku does not really want to leave Inter Milan, certainly not as long as Antonio Conte is there. But the pandemic has hit hard and Inter’s majority shareholders, Suning have been forced to divest from their huge investments into Chinese football already, and that may not be their only cost-cutting measure. And that might undo the Conte-Lukaku bond well before their preferred timetables.

According to Italian newspaper Il Corriere dello Sport, Inter Milan have a €130-140m hole to fill in their financial books. This could force them to sell “one or two” major players — one of them being Lukaku, currently valued at €120m by the club’s management.

That is also the kind of price to push any non-serious suitors out of the way, though not quite high enough to push the likes of Barcelona or Manchester City away, or Chelsea for that matter even if we were not willing to spend upwards of £80m (plus agent fees) back in 2017. But all Lukaku’s done since then is score goals, and that’s something we could certainly use...
