In addition to the centre forward and centre back positions, Chelsea will be undoubtedly monitoring players in various other positions as well, even in midfield. As unlikely as it may sound at the moment, a new central midfielder could be needed, especially with neither N’Golo Kanté nor Jorginho getting any younger — and, especially the latter, constantly linked with a move away — and Billy Gilmour potentially heading out on loan.
One player reportedly on our watchlist is Georginio Wijnaldum of Liverpool, who’s somewhat surprisingly set to become a free agent in the summer. Wijnaldum has been rumored to be heading to Barcelona, but with the deal not done yet, Chelsea could yet enter the picture, as per Marca (agents gonna agent).
The Netherlands international has been a key player for the Reds since joining in 2016, making at least 40 appearances every year including the current season already as well, but could be looking for a fresh challenge after spending half a decade on Merseyside. Alongside Chelsea and Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and PSG are also apparently interested. However, Gini is on the other side of 30 as of a few months ago, and that alone would make Chelsea singing him unlikely.
One potential target, however, who is very far from turning 30 is Eduardo Camavinga of Rennes. The 18-year-old has already been linked with the Blues, though Real Madrid are said to be the frontrunners for his signature. However, as Diario AS point out, Camavinga’s arrival at Real Madrid could be linked to the future of their manager, Zinedine Zidane.
Zidane is said to be a huge proponent of the young midfielder, and vice-versa, but with Zidane’s future at Real Madrid uncertain, Camavinga could decide against moving there. This would certainly boost Chelsea’s chances, especially if the 18-year-old remains adamant on transferring to a new club this summer.
However, before making any considerable investment at the position, we will need to look at the options we already have at our disposal, especially with Conor Gallager making a strong claim with his season on loan at West Brom. As Goal reports, Chelsea have a lot of faith in Gallagher’s abilities, but with other clubs like Crystal Palace also showing an interest in the 21-year-old, this may well be one of the bigger decisions that we will have to make in the summer.
