David Alaba has been expected to be heading to Real Madrid in the summer after rumors of a pre-contract agreement emerged, however, latest reports appear to have debunked that theory.
According to Sport BILD (via Inside Futbol), the long-time Bayern Munich defender has, in fact, not finalized a summer transfer yet, and is still available as a free agent come the end of the season. The report also claims that Alaba is considering a move to the Premier League since he can, and probably will get a better offer there than in Spain.
Real Madrid’s offer was reportedly around €11m, while Manchester City are said to have tabled a pay package worth €14m per season, as per Diario AS. Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, as well as Real’s domestic rivals, Barcelona, are said to hold an interest as well, though it’s unlikely that the Blaugrana could meet such salary demands given their financial situation.
In theory, this news bodes well for Chelsea’s chances of signing the 28-year-old, but more likely than not, this is just a ploy by his agent, Pini Zahavi, to extract a bigger, better offer from Alaba’s dream club, Real Madrid.
