Thomas Tuchel is the fourth manager in N’Golo Kanté’s five-year Chelsea career, and apparently that’s not something he’s too happy about.
According to the Telegraph, Kanté has become “unsettled” and disillusioned with the constant “upheaval” at the club, and apparently his future is in some doubt. While he does have over two years left on his contract right now, one of Tuchel’s primary tasks thus will be to convince the 29-year-old to stay. Kanté of course hasn’t made his displeasure known in public — nor should we expect that to ever happen — but understandably, he doesn’t want to keep hopping from project to project at this stage in his career. And Real Madrid are probably more than happy to welcome him still.
Tuchel is undoubtedly an admirer of the World Cup-winner as well after trying to sign him repeatedly at PSG — he had to settle for Idrissa Gueye instead — and the Guardian reinforce that idea. It’s hard to see the new man in charge allowing Kanté to depart anytime soon, just as was the case with all his other Chelsea managers, but things aren’t always so simple in football.
Kante’s importance could become even more pronounced now that a move for Declan Rice has been ruled out, with Chelsea reportedly considering the extension of Kante’s contract to beyond 2023 (have to get that in before he turns 30 in two months!). Of course, Kanté’s desire to stay could well be directly correlated to our performances on the pitch, so maybe we should start our work on that first.
