Ousmane Dembélé has to be one of the more perplexing players in recent times. Despite his obvious phenomenal talent, he had never been able to quite establish himself at Barcelona, and that trend seemed likely to continue this season as well, until Ansu Fati’s unfortunate injury.
However, since then, Dembélé has grabbed his chances with both hands, and is once again starting to show shades of the player Barca paid €130m for in their post-Neymar panic. His recent form has been so good that the Blaugrana now want to renew his contract, which expires in 2022.
But Dembélé will reportedly only start talks after a new Club President is elected. And in case an agreement cannot be reached, Barcelona will look to sell him. According to Diario Sport, Chelsea along with Manchester United, Juventus and Bayern Munich are closely monitoring the situation. It’s worth noting that United tried to sign Dembélé last summer too, only for the player to reject the move.

The now 23-year-old Dembélé has been very efficient in front of goal this season, scoring 6 times and adding 3 assists in just 1131 minutes. Both Barcelona and Dembélé seemingly want to continue the relationship, but Barcelona’s strained finances means that they will have to be prudent in the wages that they offer, which could provide an opportunity for the likes of Chelsea to swoop in.
Of course, that latter part is all speculative, but they don’t call it Silly Season for nothing!
