Before 2015 turned into the darkest timeline, Chelsea were on the verge of a (second Mourinho) dynasty. The
Special Happy One had seemingly built his next masterpiece with a League and League Cup double, but he knew that we needed to keep adding to the team, and he had identified Everton’s John Stones as a key target.
Chelsea spent that entire summer pursuing the center back, but all we managed to get was a disturbing image of a naked Roberto Martinez singing in shower — plus one trivia answer in Papy Djilobodji.
Stones would end up leaving Everton the next summer anyway, and sign with Manchester City, where he’s been trying to establish himself ever since — unsuccessfully.
The arrival of former Chelsea prospect, by way of Bournemouth, Nathan Aké last week has just about signaled the end of the Stones experiment for Guardiola & Co. So now he’s back in the rumor mill where either his agent or City themselves are trying to drum up some interest.
As per the Mirror, the now 26-year-old center back could be available for as low as £20m — he does have just two years left on his City contract — and that is said to have “sparked interest” from Frank Lampard at Chelsea, who “feels” that he can “resurrect” the England international’s career.
One can only hope that this is just tabloid BS. What Chelsea need isn’t another reclamation project, even if there’s a dearth of available center backs on the market.
