Chelsea’s interest in Real Madrid loanee Sergio Reguilón was first reported just yesterday, but according to ESPN, talks are already at an “advanced stage” between the Blues and the left back’s entourage, which includes the familiar agent Kia Joorabchian.

Given that there were supposedly up to a dozen teams tracking the highly rated 23-year-old, with Everton reportedly even submitting a bid last week, this seems a bit surprising, although Chelsea have recently developed a habit of getting things done quickly — once we put our minds to it.

As per the report, the main detail that’s missing right now is an idea over the structure and price of the deal, with “discussions ongoing” whether to make this a loan a la Mateo Kovačić, or skip a step and go straight for a €25m transfer. Previous reports had intimated that Real would be happy with a deal as low as €20m, though perhaps they raised their price given all the interest in the young left back.

Chelsea’s hunt for a new left-back is no secret. Ben Chilwell is said to be the primary target, but £80m price has caused Chelsea to start looking elsewhere, for cheaper options.

Reguilón played a key role in Sevilla finishing in the Champions League places, with 2 goals and 4 assists in 31 appearances. With Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane preferring Marcelo and newly acquired Ferland Mendy at left back, the club can use Reguilón to raise some much needed funds. Reguilón came up in the Real academy, but he’s said to be interested in a fresh challenge in the Premier League.

Could he join another former Real Madrid academy youngster in Marcos Alonso at Chelsea? With Emerson possibly leaving, this deal would make great sense and the financial impact would be more ideal as well.
