Spanish champions Real Madrid need to offset €180m in losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and are hoping to raise a good portion of that by selling off some of their loan army.
They already let right back Achraf Hakimi go to Inter Milan for €40m after his loan at Borussia Dortmund ended, and now they could be letting a player from the opposite flank do the same as well: left back Sergio Reguilón, who had quite a successful temporary stint with Sevilla this season. (The Mail recently claimed that he was “voted the best left back in La Liga”, but it’s unclear where they got that from because that’s not an actual award for La Liga.)
According to Sky Sports, Chelsea have joined the “race” for the 23-year-old, though based on previous reporting from Spain, that race already had a massive field. Up 10 others were said to be interested and that’s before Everton supposedly made an £18m bid last week. Of course, with Real Madrid apparently happy to let him go for under €20m, it’s entirely unsurprising to see this much action — not to mention that Reguilón switched agents to Kia Joorabchian recently as well.
As far as Chelsea are concerned, Reguilón would be a far cheaper and probably not much worse option than Ben Chilwell, who may not command an £80m fee anymore after Leicester City’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, but will still be far from reasonably priced.
