Chelsea have made not one but two bids for Stade Rennais goalkeeper Édouard Mendy — at least according to English media.
But there are always two sides to these stories, and French media are less convinced. In fact, a local report from Ouest France calls Mendy “untransferable”, adding that Rennes have received no offers and have intention of selling anyway.
Well then.
Meanwhile, Mendy’s situation is further complicated by a positive COVID-19 test — welcome to our new reality — which the report confirms was the reason for his absence from the weekend’s match against Montpellier. But the 28-year-old is expected back with the team soon (he’s been in quarantine for most last week), and expected to stay with the team for the rest of the season.
With three years left on Mendy’s contract, Rennes are certainly in a strong position from which to negotiate — either to get a high price, or to just keep Mendy for their upcoming Champions League campaign.
Sounds like €20m isn’t going to get this done.
