Spare Chelsea left back Emerson Palmieri is expected to leave the club and return to the Serie A this summer, but if that is to happen, the wheels need to start turning and turning fairly soon — especially as Chelsea have now secured the signature of Ben Chilwell, and there’s truly no space in the squad for three left backs (plus César Azpilicueta, too).
Linked with Juventus and Inter Milan, it’s the latter who looked to be in the lead, thanks in part to Antonio Conte, under whose tenure Emerson was brought to Stamford Bridge in the first place. But with Chelsea reportedly holding out for €25-30m, or so, Inter have started looking elsewhere. They may even be close to actually signing someone, with Aleksandar Kolarov apparently set to join from AS Roma.
Where does that leave Emerson? According to his agent, in the same place as before, which is to say, not in a great place (and that’s before we consider that he might be one of the eight players currently in quarantine).
“Is it possible that he will leave Chelsea? Yes, this possibility exists. I have not yet spoken to the club. I can only say that Inter are interested in the player. We will see.”
While it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Inter would sign two left backs — Conte does love his wing-backs after all — it doesn’t sound like Emerson’s anywhere near close to leaving Chelsea just yet.
There’s a little over a month to go in the transfer window, with the new Premier League season set to start in two weeks, and the Serie A the week after that.
