Chelsea have a new left back — welcome, Ben Chilwell! — and that’s great, but it also means that we’re now officially one man too heavy in that department.

The player who’s likely to make way is Emerson, rather than the more experienced (i.e. older and better paid with a longer contract) and more specialized (i.e. actually good at being a wing-back, but only at being a wing-back) Marcos Alonso. Emerson still seems to carry a good reputation back in Italy despite two and a half seasons of mostly unimpressive play in England.

But that doesn’t mean that moving him on will be easy. Chelsea continue to demand €25-30m for him, but no one in the Serie A seems ready to pay that — certainly not Inter “always be bargain-hunting” Milan, especially when they might have other viable options as well, such as AS Roma’s Aleksandar Kolarov.

Other reports still put Emerson in Inter’s court, but not as a transfer but rather a loan with an option to buy. But of course it’s a loan with an option to buy.

There are no fees mentioned by Corriere dello Sport (via Sempre Inter) in connection with this loan move, but the overall package would probably still be under our asking price.

So that’s not great, but we might not have too many other options. (See also: Zappacosta, Bakayoko, Drinkwater, Batshuayi, others?)
