Swansea City came to within just a couple games of earning promotion to the Premier League, and two Chelsea loanees played crucial roles in that success, midfielder Conor Gallagher and center back Marc Guehi. But while Gallagher’s currently back with Chelsea, Guehi is back with Swansea City instead.
The Swans confirmed Guehi’s return yesterday, with the 20-year-old singing on for a season-loan loan. They seem quite stoked about it, which is certainly a good thing.
After making his senior Chelsea debut last fall and collecting two appearances under Frank Lampard, both in the League Cup, Guehi hit the loan circuit and joined Steve Cooper’s promotion hopefuls. Many expected that the initial six-month stay would turn into an 18-month stay, and that’s essentially what has now happened.
Guehi made 14 appearances, including all 180 minutes of the two-legged playoff tie against Brentford, and is looking to build on that in the coming season.
“I’m very happy. I never really left! I really enjoyed my time at Swansea last season, so it made sense to extend my time here. It was a really good opportunity for me last season. I played games and the support from the fans was amazing. I was part of a group of really good footballers and characters who helped me a lot.
“I want to get an opportunity to play and keep learning and progressing. The most important thing, though, is that we are winning.”

If things work out as well as expected, Guehi could very well be part of the next group of young players to challenge for a first-team spot at Chelsea next summer — center back will certainly be on the agenda in 12 months, with only a stopgap solution applied this year in Thiago Silva.
Best of luck, Marc!
