Chelsea’s summer of free
love spending continues with the arrival of Ben Chilwell from Leicester city. That’s another cool £50m or so dropped — which sounds like a lot, but is a far cry from Leicester City’s original £80m asking price.
The 23-year-old has signed a five-year contract, and will presumably fix the left back position for at least as long, if not longer.
“I am delighted to be joining Chelsea at this very exciting time for the club. I’m looking forward to being a part of this young, dynamic squad led by Frank Lampard as we challenge for honours next season. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully it won’t be long before we’re playing in front of the Chelsea fans at Stamford Bridge.”

A product of the Leicester City academy, Chilwell leaves the club after 123 senior professional appearances (4 goals, 12 assists) and just a couple seasons after signing a six-year contract. He’s also collected 11 England caps in the meantime, though he is not part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for next week’s Nations League matches on account of the heel injury that’s likely to keep him out for the first couple weeks of the season. Chelsea are evidently not concerned about that.
“We are very pleased to have completed our third addition to our exciting squad for the coming season. Ben brings plenty of top-level experience playing in the Premier League, Champions League and at international level, despite his young age.
“We are confident Ben will adapt very quickly to being a Chelsea player and with the fixture programme for 2020/21 especially busy, he is a fantastic addition to the squad needed to challenge for honours.”

Welcome, Ben, let’s win some things!
