Chelsea’s hunt for a centre back is taking us all around Europe with links to Jose Gimenez from the Spanish La Liga, Declan Rice and Lewis Dunk from the English Premier League, Matthias Ginter from the German Bundesliga, and many more. One of the newest names added to the list has been Thiago Silva, who’s looking for his next team.

The PSG captain will be leaving the club after the Champions League final, and as first reported a couple days ago by the Telegraph and now again by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are one of the teams Silva’s agent is soliciting for a bid. The interesting part in the latter report is that Chelsea “seriously considering” this option.

Chelsea are probably the biggest name in the mixer, that also includes Fiorentina and three other unnamed teams.

Obviously, Thiago Silva is now in the twilight of his career and not the player he once was. Soon to be 36, he has definitely lost a step and it’s questionable whether he would be able to adapt to the fast-paced Premier League at this stage of his career. (Though he seems to be doing just fine in the Champions League.) What cannot be questioned, however, is his leadership ability.

Expecting Thiago Silva to solve our defensive issues at this stage in his career is a bit too optimistic, but the guy’s a natural leader and a seasoned veteran, qualities that also are in somewhat short supply in the squad.

It’s worth keeping an eye on this situation, especially after the Champions League final on Sunday.
