The Athletic’s latest round-up of Chelsea’s transfer market activities when it comes to center backs includes three familiar names, with three familiar problems: Declan Rice (too much money), Thiago Silva (too old), and Lewis Dunk (too unglamorous).
That said, Dunk’s situation might be worth revisiting, since according to the report, Dunk “believes” that he does have an “understanding” with Brighton that he’d be able to leave if the club received an “acceptable offer” from a top-six team. There’s no guess as to what that acceptable offer may be, but they surmise it would be more than what teams are currently offering for Ben White, which is around £25m but probably rising towards £30m soon.
UPDATE: Brighton announced today that Dunk has signed a 5-year contract extension with the club. LOL!

That certainly would be a fair bit of cash for a solid if unspectacular defender who will be turning 29 in November. And Chelsea’s talks with Brighton were more “market research” than actual interest, according to the report. But should we grow desperate enough in our search to bolster our defensive ranks as we get closer to the season and transfer deadline day in early October, players like Dunk could grow more and more attractive, leading us to fall back into old, bad habits.
