Dean Henderson would be, arguably, the ideal signing to reinforce Chelsea’s goalkeeping position after a season that saw us leak 54 goals in 38 Premier League games. The 23-year-old has phenomenal shot-stopping skills and an aura of command in the air — two traits that the Blues should certainly be targeting.
Unfortunately for Chelsea, Henderson belongs to Manchester United, and if the proposition of selling a star to a domestic rival didn’t sound bad enough, the fact that the Red Devils need a goalkeeper of their own as well, either now or in the near future doesn’t help the situation.
The Manchester United academy graduate was always more likely to stay with the Red Devils and it looks to be panning out precisely in that way. After some minor hiccups over game-time assurances, they are in advanced negotiations over a new long-term deal, as per Sky Sports. Henderson’s current contract expires in 2022, although there is an option for an additional year.
While the deal hasn’t been sealed yet, Sheffield United will certainly be buoyed by this news as they were hoping to bring the goalkeeper back on loan for another season. A new contract and a subsequent loan to the Blades for the third time will be the most probable arrangement, with Henderson returning to Old Trafford in 2021 to stake a claim over David De Gea.
It was always unlikely that Henderson would join, or be allowed to join Chelsea this summer, despite the Blues’ tempting offer. Chelsea will have to look elsewhere.
