Chelsea’s pursuit of Ben Chilwell seems to be getting closer to its fruitful conclusion, which should mean that the departure of (at least one of) Emerson or Marcos Alonso should be getting closer as well.
And that’s precisely the story from Italy this morning, where Gazzette dello Sport (via Sport Witness) are keeping an eye on the situation just as Inter Milan and Juventus are said to be keeping an eye on Emerson.
But just as in the case of Jorginho, Juventus’ head coaching change from Maurizio Sarri to Andrea Pirlo — the former Chelsea head coach getting replaced for the second year running by a club legend with barely any actual management experience — has caused a shifting of priorities. Inter Milan are now in the clear should they continue their pursuit of the 26-year-old left back, whose price tag was apparently €30m but is “destined to drop” as Chelsea’s need to sell becomes more obvious.
Chelsea can’t be too choosy when it comes to jettisoning the fair amount of deadwood that’s in the current squad. Other clubs will know that as well, further weakening our negotiating position especially given the current economic situation.
