Bayer Leverkusen CEO, Fernando Carro is the latest to chime in on the Kai Havertz situation, confirming the 21-year-old’s “desire” for a new challenge but nothing much concrete or useful beyond that.
“It has always been clear that there will be talks once the Europa League is over for us. Still, there is no formal offer yet. Kai has told us about his desire to make the next step. Whether that can be materialized soon, I can’t say at the moment. There are several clubs who have Kai in their plans for the future.”

Carro’s quotes align with the status quo in this situation, with progress still fairly slow, despite Leverkusen’s elimination from the Europa League at the start of this week. According to kicker however (via Inside Futbol), Leverkusen are now also hoping to finalize Kai’s sale soon, so that they can focus on their own incoming transfers for next season.
One of the players on the Bundesliga side’s wishlist is Inter Milan wingback Valentino Lazaro, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Newcastle United. With Borussia Mönchengladbach and RB Leipzig also pursuing his signature, Inter Milan are demanding €20m. Leverkusen are hoping that a deal for Havertz concludes soon so that they can move for Lazaro before the others make serious inroads.
This does sound positive from Chelsea’s perspective, even if it sounds like we’re about to spend big money at left back (as well?). While there is still some distance to cover, there is a strong belief that an agreement will be reached soon.
