Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, attacker, wonderboy Kai Havertz (probably) wants Champions League football, and so do Chelsea. That might be a reason why we will be focusing on getting there first, before making a proper move for the 21-year-old, according to a report from ESPN today.
The other reason may be strictly financial, with the expected windfall of prize money adding to Chelsea’s warchest and helping to fund the Havertz move. Bayer Leverkusen are still seeking around £90m in the middle of a pandemic that has severely depressed the transfer market already. Chelsea are hoping to get a deal done around £70-75m instead, maybe with a few bonuses included as well.
Those details will need to get ironed out if (and when?) Chelsea do sit down to negotiate. Even more reason to confirm our top-four finish then, which we could do with a win tomorrow at Anfield, or a win at home against Wolves on Sunday.
