With each passing match, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Chelsea need to do something about the centre back situation. Despite Frank Lampard’s best attempts to solidify the defense by shuffling the four CBs in order to find the optimal combination, little has changed and the Blues are still leaking goals from left, right and centre. It may finally be time to accept that we need reinforcements at the position, a player who can not only defend well, but also act as a leader to our frail back-line.
Declan Rice has been reported to be one of the targets that Chelsea are looking at to strengthen the aforementioned position, but logic dictates that one of the current CBs will have to leave in order to accommodate him.
Recent reports posit towards Kurt Zouma being that person, with Tottenham Hotspurs and Everton being touted as two of the interested parties. According to French football programme, Telefoot, there could be an additional interested club from across the channel in the form of PSG.
#Mercato @telefoot_TF1

According to the tweet, it’s actually Zouma who has been offered to the Parisian club, rather than the other way around, however, PSG coach, Thomas Tuchel actually seemingly ‘likes’ the player and even though there have been no discussions yet, this does give some optimism to a deal taking place. The reported asking price is €30m, which may appear as a little cheap for the player whose contract expires in 2023, but the financial effect of the pandemic will need to be taken into account as well.
Kurt Zouma may not be the downright worst of the current crop of CBs, but then again, none of them are outstandingly good either. Chelsea do desperately need an upgrade at CB, and with Zouma garnering the most attention, he may well be the one to make way for a new incoming player at the position.
